Departmental Overview

The Innovative Genomics Institute IGI is composed of diverse researchers with a powerful combined expertise. After the development of the CRISPR-Cas9 system for rewriting DNA, we saw the potential of applying this technology to solve some of humanity's greatest problems. Our scientists conduct world-class research, driven by the real possibility to cure human disease, end hunger, and protect the environment.


Responsibilities

Sample Intake:
  • Accept and reject collected SARS-CoV-2 specimen kits in a Biosafety Cabinet.
  • LIMs interactions and proper handling of Protected Health Information.
  • Adherence to rigid rejection criteria and safety guidelines.

Accessioning:
  • Process accepted specimens through the Hamilton STARlet to form plates for extraction. Process currently involves a large array of screw cap tubes that must be decapped and capped before and after the process.

Robotic Liquid Handler Management:
  • Operate and monitor progress of samples through the Hamilton Vantage extraction and qPCR plating processes to ensure task completion without error.

qPCR:
  • Review and approve qPCR results and amplification curves.

Documentation & General:
  • Make records of any deviation to written processes in the LIMs.
  • Assist with proficiency testing and safety inspections.
  • Maintenance of laboratory inventory.
  • Waste disposal.

Required Qualifications
  • Experience with general laboratory techniques.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Willingness and ability to learn new methods and skills for changing research priorities.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a technical team.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate work tasks with others, and meet daily deadlines in a fast-paced facility setting.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a CLIA and or BSL2 facility.
  • Experience with standard molecular biology techniques: DNA/RNA extraction, PCR and qPCR, and serological testing assays.
  • Experience with basic molecular and cellular biology techniques.
  • Experience working in a core or resource facility setting.

Licenses or certifications required, if any:
    CLS certification required for shift lead position only, but preferred for all staff.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience.

This is an 18-month, part-time (20-hours per week), Limited (temporary) position.

This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Research Support Professionals Unit (RX) between the University of California and the University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE).
