Assistant Professor of Biology: Quantitative Ecology
The Department of Biological Sciences at Smith College is seeking an ecologist with strong quantitative skills to fill a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Biology beginning July 1, 2021.
We seek a dynamic candidate with a commitment to high quality undergraduate education and research involvement, a record of research and publication in ecology, and a PhD by the time of appointment; postdoctoral experience is desirable. We expect the successful candidate to develop a productive research program focused on ecological phenomena at any scale, combining experimental and/or field measurements with rigorous quantitative analysis, theory, or modeling. This program should encourage the active involvement of undergraduate researchers.
Teaching responsibilities will include rotation through the department’s introductory Biodiversity, Ecology and Conservation course; development of a new intermediate level ecology course emphasizing survey and experimental methods, field work, and data analysis; and an upper level course in the candidate’s area of expertise. Ideally, the candidate will broaden the department’s capacity to engage students—through use of quantitative methodologies—in coursework and research related to ecology, biodiversity and/or global environmental change.
Exceptional resources to support research and teaching in ecology and in plant sciences include the College’s ~100 ha MacLeish Field Station with forest, field, and wetland habitats, a BSL-2 plant growth room, a storied Botanic garden and Herbarium, the Mill River/Paradise Pond ecosystem, spatial analysis and GIS labs, and centers for microscopy, molecular biology, proteomics, and aqueous biogeochemistry. Programs in Biochemistry, Environmental Science and Policy, Statistical and Data Sciences, Neuroscience, and Landscape Studies facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration.
