The Office of Community Engagement is responsible for working with Stanford's internal teams and external community partners to implement the new university vision. Community Engagement will lead the university development of strategies that provide for greater regional, national, and global service and engagement on the part of all Stanford constituencies. A key initial focus of this team will be to forge enhanced collaboration with local partners to address sustainability, affordability, education and other critical local challenges.

JOB PURPOSE:
The Assistant Vice President of Community Engagement, is a newly created strategic leadership role, responsible for directing programs or functions for university wide impact in consultation with the Associate VP of Community Engagement and larger External Relations team in order to enhance the public reputation of Stanford within both the internal Stanford community and the external communities in which the university operates. These program and functions will enhance and expand Stanford University's relationships and standing with community-based organizations across sectors. This will require finding new and creative ways for Stanford to connect with internal and external communities to share best practices and work towards mutual outcomes, generate and disseminate ideas, discuss research and initiatives of importance to Stanford and its communities, forge new collaborations, and amplify impact. This position reports to the Associate Vice President of Community Engagement and will work closely with Stanford faculty and staff, and external stakeholders.

CORE DUTIES*:
  • Lead strategic planning and analysis for community engagement programs or functions with significant business, regulatory and/or technical challenges requiring subject matter expertise. Manage and direct the development, implementation, administration and evaluation of programs or functions. Monitor trends and recommend programs or functions direction.
  • Manage and direct the enlistment and the strategy of matching regional stakeholder interests with university priorities to maximize the philanthropic investment of stakeholders on and off campus.
  • Act as the subject matter expert for school/unit and/or the university regarding the interpretation, implementation and compliance with policies and regulations.
  • Recommend actions and/or resolve complex issues that span organizational boundaries.
  • Represent the Office of Community Engagement at the departmental and university level and to external/internal stakeholders and constituencies.
  • Direct and manage outreach strategy that may include relationship development, communications, and compliance.
  • Oversee or supervise staff in the development and implementation of programs or functions.
  • May develop and/or oversee budgets; manage finances including monitoring, analyzing, forecasting, and reporting.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
    Education & Experience:
    Bachelor's degree and seven years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Experience in leading strategic planning and analysis for local community engagement programs or functions.
  • Expert knowledge of local government and community organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area, strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of Stanford preferred- or an institution of similar size - with multifaceted roles as a premier university, major employer, substantial trust, landholder and public policy stakeholder.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to influence and motivate constituencies which could span multiple organizational boundaries.
  • Demonstrated excellent planning, organizational and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound business decisions using good business judgment and innovative and creative problem-solving.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage financial, organizational and staff resources.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills with the ability to cultivate professional and business partnerships.
  • Relevant subject matter expertise.
  • Strong program management skills.
  • Experience in business process improvement methodology.
  • Ability to act independently and as part of a team.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
  • Occasionally use a telephone.
  • Rarely lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 11-20 pounds.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • May require working flexible hours, including nights and weekends. Regular travel may be required.
