Requirements

The Chief of Staff position is a critical senior leader of the School of Continuing Studies (SCS), which now employs a staff of 140+ administrative employees and 30+ full-time non-tenure line faculty members. Reporting to the Dean, the Chief of Staff provides high-level analytical and project management support to the Dean, and oversees the central coordination of all functions and activities of SCS operations, including both the academic and non-academic functions of the School.

S/he manages and advises the Dean, faculty, and staff on day-to-day activities ensuring efficiency and effectiveness and optimizing the use of available school resources. S/he leads Dean's Cabinet meetings, and tracks and apprises the dean regularly about the status and progress of cross-functional initiatives led by key leaders of the School.

The role has the responsibility to create, manage, and assess critical academic and business practices and the coordination of SCS's long-term and strategic planning. Must possess a strong knowledge base of the academic programs, operations, and strategic goals of all functional areas that report to the Dean in order to create a cohesive and strategic approach to School operations. Supports the Dean in developing infrastructure, analyzing current academic programs and operational processes, and recommending and implementing procedural and/or policy changes to improve academic programs and general school operations.

S/he acts as a liaison to the University President and Provost Offices, Office of Public Affairs, Human Resources, General Counsel, and the SCS faculty governance committee. The Chief of Staffworks with the Dean to address student, faculty, and staff issues. This person represents the Dean in selected internal and external interactions with faculty, staff, students, alumni, senior University administrators as well as government and community leaders. S/he monitors linkages with Deans and other senior administrative officers to ensure responsiveness.

In addition to the work in supporting the Dean's vision for SCS and overseeing the operations of the Dean's Office, this role is responsible for two major areas of the School's work:
  • Communications/Alumni Affairs: Oversees a team of two staff dedicated to all communications and alumni relations efforts for SCS. This includes responsibility for all messaging and communications to the SCS community of students, faculty, alumni, staff, university colleagues, and partners (10,000+ people annually).
  • Curricular/Co-Curricular Events: The Chief of Staff oversees a team of two staff responsible for directing the planning and execution of all academic and co-curricular events (150+/year). This includes all new student orientations, faculty welcomes, Commencement, student recruitment activities, academic program panels/conferences, and programmatic events.


Qualifications
  • Master's degree
  • A minimum of 5 years of management experience in a complex environment is required.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and strong managerial ability. Ability to interact and influence at the most senior levels of an organization and to work collaboratively across functions, levels, and departments toward shared objectives.
  • Significant experience working with academic programs and faculty
  • Experience with higher education budgeting, marketing, and enrollment management models
  • Strong writing and communication skills, including comfort with public presentations to a wide range of audiences.
  • Ability to research a diverse array of topics and distill the key messages in preparation for presentations about the School of Continuing Studies
  • Ability to work cooperatively and strategically in a team environment with all levels of professional, technical, and administrative staff and to integrate resources on a timely and organized basis.
  • Sound management skills, ability to think strategically while balancing several complex agendas.
  • Established skills in planning and managing multiple, diverse and organizational needs
  • Demonstrated expertise in a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Commitment to the mission of the School of Continuing Studies, and the vision of Dean.
  • A sense of humor, and a desire to work with a variety of people in expanding the work of the SCS
  • Fluency in all Microsoft office products, and use of the internet and web required.
  • Possess character that combines human compatibility, integrity, the highest standards of ethics, and the determination to be an effective team member. The person in this position must have outstanding oral and written communication skills, strong organizational and interpersonal skills, careful judgement and discretion with respect to strategic, confidential, and sensitive material, flexibility and ability to prioritize tasks.
