Departmental Overview

The Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI) is a partnership between the University of California, Berkeley and the University of California, San Francisco. Combining the fundamental research expertise and the biomedical talent at UCB and UCSF, the IGI focuses on unraveling the mechanisms underlying CRISPR-based genome editing and applying this technology to develop and deploy genome engineering to cure disease, ensure food security, and sustain the environment for current and future generations. To complement this work, the IGI puts special emphasis on education about the scientific and societal implications of genome engineering. These efforts encourage public engagement and help guide regulatory decision-making.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the IGI has shifted focus to the COVID-19 pandemic. The IGI has set up a coronavirus testing facility and are pursuing research into new diagnostics, therapeutics, and other topics. One of these is the Free Asymptomatic Saliva Testing (FAST) study. FAST kiosks are set up on the UC Berkeley campus for UC Berkeley employees and students approved to work on campus during the pandemic. These employee and students can sign up to participate in the FAST Study. Study participants are provided regular asymptomatic testing using an experimental saliva-based test for COVID-19. UC Berkeley will analyze its saliva samples at a pop-up lab in the IGI, with results returned within five days.

Responsibilities

Customer Service:
  • Responsible for Kiosk participant customer service and resolving all escalated participant concerns.
  • Public facing position that needs to be comfortable interacting with general public.
  • Directly supervise and indirectly oversee the activities of all employees and students at the kiosk sites.
  • For direct reports, performs recruitment, performance evaluations, scheduling and handling disciplinary issues.
  • Distributes and sets up work; monitors the progress of work of the Kiosk.
  • Reviews, monitors and resolves issues.
  • Evaluates kiosk operational needs on an ongoing basis in conjunction with Kiosk Program Manager and implements changes as needed.

Regulatory Compliance:
  • Ensures regulatory compliance relative to safety.
  • Ensures the team and participants follow COVID-19 safety standards including social distancing, wearing a mask, and cleaning up following protocols provided.
  • Handles escalations with public population compliance.
  • Assists Kiosk Program Manager with budgetary forecasting and planning, and resource allocation.
  • Assists Manager with setting priorities on equipment purchases and finalizes purchases.

Required Qualifications
  • Ideal candidate will have supervisory experience in a clinical setting.
  • Working knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Interpersonal skills including verbal and written communication, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising, and counseling to effectively motivate others.
  • Skills to evaluate issues and identify resolutions.
  • Strong service orientation with the ability to effectively manage multiple priorities.
  • Candidate must be comfortable working with participants undergoing asymptotic SARS-CoV-2 saliva testing.

Education/Training:
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience.
