AS-R/Physical Science Research Scientist in X-ray Detector Development

The X-ray Astronomy and Observational Cosmology (XOC) group at Stanford University has an opening for a Research Engineer to work on detector development for new X-ray satellite missions.

The XOC group hosts a dynamic team engaged across many fields of astrophysics, including studies of compact objects, galaxies and galaxy clusters, and cosmological measurements utilizing large, multi-wavelength surveys. Hardware efforts within the group are focused on the development of readout electronics for large area detectors to be deployed on future X-ray astronomy missions, including the Wide Field Imager for the Athena satellite (https://www.the-athena-x-ray-observatory.eu/) and next-generation CCD detectors for NASA missions, such as the proposed Lynx X-ray Observatory (https://www.lynxobservatory.com/). These detectors will be required to provide unprecedented levels of performance.

The ideal candidate for this position will have significant expertise in microelectronics and, specifically, high-performance analog integrated circuits. Experience with sensor modeling, studies of signal and noise in circuits, equivalent noise charge, low-noise amplifiers, charge amplifier design, input transistor optimization, time-variant and time-invariant filters, and analog and digital signal processing would be an advantage. The position will entail schematic design and entry, circuit simulation, layout and verification processes, and test measurements of the manufactured microelectronics in both standalone configurations and integrated into full X-ray detector systems.

Applicants should have, or be in the process of completing, a Ph.D. in physics, electrical engineering or a related discipline, or have an equivalent level of experience in electronics development.
