The Associate Director of Financial Aid, under the direction of the Associate Dean for Admissions and Financial Aid, serves as an integral part of the Financial Aid professional team committed to excellent customer service. As such, the candidate supports the team in its efforts to administer all financial aid programs to law students - through counseling and advising, through communication of policies and procedures, through application of appropriate methodology.


Responsibilities:

  • Management of day-to-day operation of the Office of Financial Aid; oversight of the day-to-day management of the Department of Education's Direct Lending Program (requires knowledge of Federal rules and regulations).
  • Determination of eligibility for aid for both current students and for post-graduation funding for alumni participating in our LRAP program.
  • Awards aid exercising sound professional judgment keeping in mind both institutional polices and federal policies
  • Counseling and advising of students on eligibility, policies, financial planning and debt management.
  • Manage disbursement, drawdown and reconciliation of the Direct Lending funds.
  • Prepare federal and institutional reports.
  • Review detailed financial documents, including tax returns, for accuracy of reported financial information.
  • Prepare/review reports to identify changes/conflicting data in database, correct student data records when necessary and communicate those changes appropriately.
  • Develop reports which track trends in aid at the Law School.
  • Communicate complex financial information to students, agencies, and other appropriate individuals or organizations in a timely and professional manner; provide referral to other departments or individuals when necessary and remain available as a resource for future questions.
  • Manage financial aid application process and recommends new policies and procedures.
  • Review, design and update yearly Financial Aid Handbook.
  • Maintain the database as required by the demands of the PeopleSoft system and organization.
  • Design/develop and maintain SLS financial aid website.
  • Manage/supervise, train and evaluate financial aid staff.
  • Serve as Law School liaison on University-wide Financial Aid Working Group.
  • Represent the Law School in Associate Dean's absence in other University settings and at local and national conferences.
  • Assist with yield efforts of the Office of Admissions by utilizing financial aid as a recruiting tool.




Minimum Requirements:


Education and Experience:


Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience in the area of Financial Aid, or combination of education and relevant experience. Bachelor's Degree preferred.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:



  • Knowledge of student aid policies and procedures and experience in student aid delivery.
  • Experience in need analysis and packaging of financial aid.
  • Ability to understand, interpret and apply complex financial aid regulations and need analysis theory.
  • Strong communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, and management. Ability to act with tact, sensitivity and good judgment.
  • Advanced analysis and problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite, knowledge and familiarity with PeopleSoft.
  • Advanced customer service skills.
  • Understanding of financial transactions.
  • Ability to ensure and apply compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, counseling and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks/projects.
  • Ability to set priorities.
  • Possess superb attention to detail skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Prior supervisory experience critical.
