The Department of Ophthalmology at Stanford University is seeking a Life Science Technician I to join the lab of Dr. Albert Wu, Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology, to perform basic functions and activities involved in defined research projects, and conduct and analyze experiments under supervision. Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Perform basic and skilled techniques in support of lab's research goals.
  • Stem Cell Tissue Culture
  • Primary Cell Tissue Culture
  • Immuno-histology
  • Animal maintenance
  • Animal dissection
  • Flow cytometry
  • Microscopy
  • Maintain accurate documentation of experimental protocols and perform mathematical analysis of data.
  • Monitor, order, and store all lab supplies. Interface with vendors and materials procurement.


Under supervision from the PI and senior lab staff, the incumbent will perform techniques that require delicate manipulation and/or fine adjustments. S/he may be expected to complete general mathematical analysis. After training is complete and adequate independent abilities have been cultivated, work will be performed routinely without direct supervision, however all work is reviewed and discussed with supervisor.

The incumbent's work is part of a larger research project. Further analysis of the work is done by others in the laboratory.

May be asked to help orient new staff members to the lab.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

At least one year of previous laboratory experience or two years of college coursework in related scientific discipline desired. Solid written and verbal communication skills, as well as demonstrated professionalism in working with colleagues (both internal and external laboratory users).


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

One year's employment experience in laboratory work or a combination of equivalent education and relevant work experience/training (e.g., one year of college science).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
Work requires the ability to follow detailed instructions and keep accurate records.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand.
  • Ability to stand and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
  • Occasionally lift and handle materials up to 10 pounds
  • Rarely carry/pull and/or push up to 20 pounds
  • Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
  • Position may require repetitive motion.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work occurs in a research laboratory environment. Depending on research, may work in the vicinity of animals, chemicals, gasses, or hazardous materials. Expected to follow all safety requirements and procedures including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) if required.
