SUMMARY OF POSITION ROLE/RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Department of Natural Sciences at Florida Polytechnic University seeks candidates to one or two faculty positions in the area of observational, experimental, theoretical, and/or computational astrophysics at the Assistant Professor or higher level to begin on August 2021. All areas of experimental and theoretical astrophysics including galaxy evolution, gravitational waves (GW), multi-messenger astrophysics, planetary atmospheres, neutrino physics, quantum gravity, dark matter, and cosmology will be considered.
The Department of Natural Sciences at Florida Polytechnic University has embarked on a new degree program in Engineering Physics that opened in August 2019. This new undergraduate program provides the nexus of Florida Polytechnic University -wide activities in engineering, physics, chemistry and biology and anticipates close collaborations between faculties in many of our academic programs.
Applicants must demonstrate the ability to develop a highly successful teaching and research program, attract independent research funding, publish the results of their research studies in leading scientific journals of their discipline, supervise graduate and undergraduate students, and to teach effectively at both the graduate and undergraduate level courses. In addition, the candidates are expected to assist in the education mission of the department and to provide whatever academic service is requested to by the Chair of Department and Director of the Sciences, Arts and Mathematics.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Demonstrate willingness and ability to work effectively with colleagues to support the mission of the institution and related academic units;

- Develop and implement evaluation and assessment techniques that are appropriate for each course;
- Use multiple measures to assess student learning on a regular basis and provide frequent feedback to students relative to their performance;
- Be available and knowledgeable and demonstrate proficiency in the practice of academic advisement of students;
- Conduct appropriate research and scholarly/creative activity within the discipline;
- Demonstrate evidence of continuing professional development and growth by being suitably active in professional and community service;
- Exhibit motivation and initiative in keeping up-to-date and current in one’s curriculum area by reading/reviewing current scholarly or creative works in their field and by attending conferences, seminars, workshops, courses, and development activities sponsored by the University;
- Serve effectively on committees and other appropriate functions that assist in University governance.
Essential Functions
- Duties include teaching undergraduate physics, engineering, and astrophysics classes at both the lower- and upper-level;
- Maintaining an active research program with undergraduate students;
- Participating in professional service;
- Course load may include service courses for students in other science disciplines and/or non-science majors;
- Active support of the achievement of departmental goals is also expected.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Physics, Astrophysics or closely related field.
- Credentials by degree and/or experience to support delivery of core courses in the department
Desired/Preferred Qualification
- Teaching and/or relevant research/industry experience
- Demonstrated ability to conduct independent and interdisciplinary funded applied research.
- Experience in curriculum delivery and development
- Experience with students’ academic mentoring
- Experience in program assessment and execution of a continuous improvement plan.
- Experience in serving on various department, college or university committees.
- Active participation in professional activities and organizations.
- Prior professional US experience with progressive responsibility.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse campus community.
