Departmental Overview

L&S is composed of six divisions (Arts & Humanities, Biological Sciences, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, Undergraduate Division, and L&S Core), which include over 40 academic departments, numerous research centers, over 800 regular faculty, and 25,000 students. L&S is supported by a General Fund budget of $258 million; annual expenditures, including restricted funds, exceed $538 million in FY20.

Reporting to the executive dean of the College of Letters & Science, the Communications Specialist develops and manages a comprehensive communications program for the College, incorporating a wide variety of communications media, including written, visual, digital, and electronic, and associated technical applications. The role will serve as the lead on all College-wide communications efforts, including the L&S website and increasing L&S visibility with both internal and external audiences.

  • The Communications Specialist is responsible for managing various complex communications platforms within the College of Letters and Science, such as the L&S Website, social media, and print communications. The incumbent is responsible for managing the development, design, and maintenance of the various platforms to help increase L&S visibility with both internal and external audiences.
  • Work with the executive dean, deans, and assistant deans to identify and prioritize communications needs in the College and to develop and implement long and short term communications plans. Work with executive dean to seek input on these from the College's advisory board and to communicate progress to board members and working groups.
  • Coordinate communications efforts among five divisions in the College to ensure effective use of resources and consistent communications to College constituents. Convene communications staff from all divisions. Serve as a resource for communications professionals in the divisions and departments and create online communications resources and tools for College staff.
  • Produce a broad range of communication pieces for use on the L&S website, social media, external-facing newsletters and marketing cloud emails, and for placement in media sources. Coordinate with communications staff College-wide to produce content and to catalog items in a central digital location.
  • Draft communications for the executive dean and other College leadership as needed.
  • Represent L&S in campuswide communications groups and liaise with campus partners (UDAR MarComm, Public Affairs, and others) to further L&S communications goals.
  • Work with deans, assistant deans, and communications staff College-wide to build an organizational brand and create tools for positioning the College strategically with its external constituents.

Required Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of all aspects of communications, including various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.
  • Advanced knowledge of the organization, including its mission, vision, goals, policies, and infrastructure; strong knowledge of current affairs and issues in higher education.
  • Advanced skills to advise and consult management on all aspects of communications, ranging from developing effective communication strategies to appropriately responding to inquiries regarding sensitive or complex issues or information.
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening, and political acumen skills.
  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking, project management, and problem recognition, avoidance, and resolution skills.
  • Advanced understanding of fundraising campaigns and the information, services, and staff that support them.
  • Advanced understanding of the user-centered design and user experience design concepts to inform consultation and advice about communication and product design to application development teams.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced skill and experience as a writer, able to clearly, engagingly, and persuasively convey complex messages in long-form and short-form, in a variety of media including electronic and print, and in tone and style and at levels of detail and technical depth appropriate for diverse audiences of varying knowledge (e.g., technical staff, campus development leadership, development officers, support staff, academic personnel, long-term employees, new hires).
  • Advanced editorial skills and experience at levels of copyediting, line editing, developmental editing, and rewriting.
  • Proven experience with effective visual presentations in both print and online publications.
