Senior Advisor for Mental Health & Well-Being Innovation

This is a one-year fixed term position.

Stanford University is seeking an accomplished professional to provide inspiration and leadership for complex, high-visibility innovation in the areas of student mental health and well-being through a public health approach, with a focus on undergraduate, graduate, and professional student populations. Projects span disparate departments, academic programs, and support units. The Senior Advisor reports to the Associate Vice Provost and Executive Director of Vaden Health Services.

Candidates need to demonstrate an intellectual curiosity -- the ability to ask big questions, interrogate and examine why problems/gaps exist, and knowing how to strategically pursue course corrections in our practice.

We are interested in candidates who have demonstrated experience engaging with diversity through activities such as fostering an inclusive environment, working with students and staff from diverse backgrounds, or incorporating diverse perspectives in their work.

In this role you will manage the following major projects:

  • Public Health: develop comprehensive public health approaches to student mental health, well-being and high-risk substance use; reviewing scholarship, analyzing existing data, defining and scoping resources; and developing coalitions and aspirational timelines.
  • Mental Health, Well-Being, and AOD committees and task forces: serve as member or leader in groups collaborating with partners across campus, executing and assessing pilot programs, communicating with the broader campus community about progress and ensuring tangible outcomes.
  • Residential Integration: work with the Assistant Vice Provost for Residential Education and the Assistant Vice Provost and Director of the Graduate Life Office and their designees to implement well-being best practices in the undergraduate and graduate residences.
  • Institute for Healthcare Improvement Triple Aim for Higher Education: oversee Stanford initiatives in the national IHI collaborative and serve as key liaison with collaborative sponsors.
  • JED Foundation initiative: orchestrate relationship with JED Foundation and the associated Healthy Minds Study..
  • Well-Being and Resources Matrix (WARM): serve as thought-partner and consultant for Stanford's novel and expanding training program.
  • Remote delivery: during COVID-19 pandemic, seek ways to pivot campus-based mental health and well-being strategies for students who must engage with campus remotely.

In the execution of the aforementioned projects, you will:
  • Take ownership for planning/managing the execution and integration of initiatives and activities, which may include members from all disciplines of the organization, including faculty.
  • Assess processes to determine how to improve quality, improve efficiency, and improve the ability to deliver desired services or outputs.
  • Present data to management to influence implementation decisions and facilitate discussions and negotiations that drive consensus on implementing recommendations within a highly complex and cross-functional environments.
  • Advise in analysis of operational intelligence metrics by defining and identifying key measures and performance metric targets and assisting in development of complex cost-benefit and return on investment analyses for proposed changes.
  • Provide hands-on team facilitation, coaching, mentoring and/or training, and process improvement subject matter expertise to business partners.

Develop and execute comprehensive change management strategy relative to project and stakeholders; orchestrate and lead change management methodologies.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:
  • A bachelor's degree in Public Health, Science, Business, or other related field and three years of progressively responsible, relevant process improvement experience or combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Excellent influence management skills - the ability to lead and inspire the work of others (through committee work, shared projects and partnerships, etc.) without direct supervision responsibilities
  • The ability to design data projects and collect, manage & understand data is essential
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including presentation skills and storytelling - the confluence of data, collaborations and curiosity, that is helpful for creating buy-in for change ideas - especially when there is little positional authority
  • A strong enterprise-wide vision, seeing the big picture, recognizing critical details and dealing with ambiguity.
