The department of Steward Observatory seeks to fill the position of Trades Maintenance Mechanic II to work at the Mt. Graham International Observatory (MGIO) located in Safford, Arizona. The selected candidate will operate and maintain heavy equipment; drive semi-trucks to and from the summit of Mt. Graham and maintain the utility services.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Drive large semi type trucks transporting freight, water and wastewater to and from the summit.
  • Operate various pieces of heavy equipment necessary for the continued operation of the telescope site. Grade roads, remove snow, maintain drainage structures, repair washouts, repair eroded areas of the access road and site.
  • Maintain heavy equipment, work with hand tools utilizing a wide knowledge of mechanic and maintenance skills.
  • Maintain water, gas, sewer and electric utility systems critical to the continued operations of the telescope site.
  • Maintain the various buildings located at the summit and at our base camp operations yard.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Vocational or technical training.
  • Selected candidate must have the ability to accomplish physical labor at high elevation, 10,500 ft.
  • Selected candidate must be able to attain a Class A CDL within six (6) months of hire date and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy. More information can be found at https://risk.arizona.edu/sites/default/files/fleetsafetypolicy.pdf
