Job description

Job location: Charlottesville, VA

Employment Type: Full-time
Posted data: 2020-08-31
Req: R0018150
Lab and Research Technician 1 employees focus on performing routine research tasks and developing skills. They assume routine to moderately complex technical support for research projects. Work is routine and can be performed with some degree of independence when following established protocols and procedures. Lab and Research Technician 1 employees perform tasks as assigned by supervisor.

The Department of Biology at the University of Virginia is hiring a Laboratory Technician to conduct research in Professor Jianhua Cang's laboratory. The Cang lab studies the neural basis of vision: how neurons in the brain respond to visual stimuli; what neural circuits give rise to such response properties; and how these circuits are established during development. We use mice and tree shrews as models and take an integrative approach that combines in vivo physiology, two-photon imaging, viral, genetic, behavioral, and computational techniques (see the lab website at https://uva.theopenscholar.com/cang-lab). The successful candidate will be self-motivated, attentive to detail, capable of working independently and with others, and have excellent verbal and written communication skills. The candidate will need to assist in a variety of day-to-day research activities, which may include (1) maintaining lab supplies and equipment; (2) mouse husbandry and record keeping; (3) tissue preparation for confocal imaging; (4) animal behavioral training; and (5) animal surgery such as stereotaxic injections of viral vectors. Experience in one or more of these areas is strongly preferred. Salary will be commensurate with experience. The earliest start date is October 1st, 2020.

This full-time position will remain open until filled.
