Summary:
The Assistant Vice Provost and Executive Director provides visionary and transformational career leadership of BEAM to ensure that it is consistent with the reputation and standing of Stanford. This person provides vision and leadership to enhance, develop and implement new career education programs, internships and employer participation. Under a new reporting line to the Associate Vice Provost for Inclusion, Community & Integrative Learning, the Assistant Vice Provost and Executive Director will lead a vision and process for developing the practices of diversity and inclusion within career education.

The Assistant Vice Provost and Executive Director will ensure that career education at Stanford is viewed as an exemplar in the field, challenging and supporting Stanford undergraduate and graduate students to become global 21st-century leaders while developing lives of meaning and purpose, and modeling best practices for career education in a diverse environment.

The Assistant Vice Provost and Executive Director must have experience serving in full-time professional leadership positions in higher education student affairs programs with specific leadership in the field of career education. This person must be both the internal and external face of BEAM at Stanford. Internally they oversee a team of 28 career education professionals, 3 administrative staff, students and interns. Externally, they are a public relations emissary to employers, foundations, non-profits, etc. Further, this person will have the ability to articulate the place and role of career education in advancing inclusion, community and integrative learning at Stanford University.

Your Responsibilities:*
Strategic Management
  • Develop and sustain the strategic mission of BEAM by aligning goals and objectives in relation to the mission of the Division and University; in particular, aligning goals and objectives with Student Affairs “Our Most Important Work.”
  • Establish and cultivate strong relationships with the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education; the Vice Provost for Graduate Education; the schools; academic departments; alumni relations; and other units, to build upon successful collaborative programs and initiatives, identify new synergies, and support student preparation to make informed career choices and acquire relevant experiences to ensure future success.
  • Design and implement progressive career and leadership development programs for undergraduate and graduate students, including establishment of viable internship programs.
  • Serve as a liaison to department chairs; program leaders; academic advisors; faculty; and administrators in internships and applied learning, and career employment needs of students and alumni.
  • Work with academic leadership to integrate student learning outcomes related to career development into the curriculum.
  • Direct eorts of managers; develop those in leadership positions and in the leadership pipeline, make hiring decisions, provide coaching and mentoring, manage performance, determine stang needs.

  • Strategic/Fiscal Planning:
  • Manage the development and evaluation of short and long-range programs focused on student career development.
  • Provide strategic direction for BEAM budget planning and revenue growth, including raising additional annual revenue via career fairs, employer contributions and other development activities undertaken through the Assistant Vice Provost and Executive Director's outreach efforts; exercise fiscal responsibility for BEAM's financial resources.
  • Develop and implement strategic plan for BEAM that will guide and inform its decision-making and ensure that the career education programs at Stanford respond to the needs of the changing and competitive job market for undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Career Education Leadership:
    • Act as a thought leader and initiate and provide direction in navigating successfully in Stanford's highly decentralized and matrixed organizational structure.
    • Encourage innovation and thinking “outside-the-box” within Career Education.
    • Monitor, analyze, and evaluate current scope of services and educational opportunities offered through BEAM; plan, implement and direct new programs under the supervision of the Associate Vice Provost for Inclusion, Community & Integrative Learning, and in coordination with other partners within Student Affairs.
    • Participate, attend and present at national, regional and local professional associations.

    To be successful in this position, you will bring:
    • Bachelor's degree and ten years of relevant experience, or combination of relevant experience and education; experience must include professional leadership positions in higher education student services programs within a large, complex, decentralized university setting.
    • Strong knowledge of current practices in career development, and demonstrated skill in creative and strategic approaches to career services programming, technology and coaching is required.
    • Demonstrated strong management skills and the ability to work and lead teams, including experience with signicant and complex budgetary/nancial management.
    • Outstanding public speaking and presentation skills are needed to communicate at all levels with tact and diplomacy, within a diverse and decentralized setting to achieve program, center and campus goals.
    • Ability to engage faculty and to steward a highly sophisticated alumni population is also required.
    • Continual review of professional best practices, of National Association of Colleges and Employers (“NACE”) standards, and of relevant laws and regulations affecting academic institutions, such as ADA and FERPA are expected.
    • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion, as well as the ability to work with a wide range of constituencies (staff, students, faculty, parents, administrators, etc.) with diplomacy and tact.
    • A record of success in developing strategic partnerships, collaborating with academic units, and achieving high satisfaction levels in meeting the needs of students.
    • An understanding of the need to infuse inclusion and community principles and practices into career education.

    In addition, our preferred requirements include:
  • Completion of an advanced degree in an academic area strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with multi-cultural and multi-ethnic dynamics of the academic and social pressures encountered by students at a renowned research university is preferred.
