Primary duties are physically demanding housekeeping cleaning and disinfecting duties in large academic, administrative and athletic buildings. Areas cleaned may include athletic venues, auditoriums, classrooms, laboratories, clinics, offices, hallways, restrooms and stairways. Duties performed include but are not limited to: operating heavy cleaning equipment, cleaning, disinfecting, moving furniture, carrying trash and recyclables, dusting, changing light bulbs, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning and disinfecting bathrooms, locker rooms, classrooms, clinics, offices, labs, walls, light fixtures, etc.
Currently hiring for temporary Housekeeper positons on 2 shifts: 8:00am-4:30pm and/or 4:00pm-12:30am, Monday through Friday including weekend work. This schedule will be flexible and may change to include working other shift hours or days depending on workloads and the needs of the Department and University. Schedule adjustments, weekend and holiday work, responding to after-hours, weekend and holiday emergencies as needed

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position

-Must be reliable, dependable and be able to work consistently through the entire shift.
-Must have some knowledge of cleaning and disinfecting methods, materials and equipment.
-Ability to perform medium to heavy physically demanding work, lift a minimum of 50 pounds, stand for long periods of time while working, lift, sweep, mop, dust, climb steps and ladders, etc. and operate a variety of commercial Housekeeping equipment. This may require standing and performing medium to heavy physical work for the entire eight-hour shift. Equipment may include large buffing machines, floor scrubbers/buffers, vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, pressure washers, 6ft ladders, etc.
-Position requires close attention to details, the ability to recognize and correct cleaning/work problems and work in a fast-paced environment. Also requires alertness to safety and security conditions.
-Ability to read and comprehend labels and instructions regarding cleaning and disinfecting matters and equipment; and have the ability to safely operate cleaning equipment and how to mix chemicals for cleaning.
-Work requires the use of cleaning/disinfecting chemicals, equipment and visual attention to detail. Assignments are not building-specific and may or may not be in an environment with heating or air conditioning.
-This position has exposure to outside elements when performing some job duties such as building unlocking/locking, moving, setting up special events, waste disposal or cleaning entrance ways and walks of trash, dirt, ice or snow, etc.
-Ability to provide coverage for other housekeeping staff and perform other duties as assigned.
-Must have reliable transportation and be able to report to work during a variety of weather conditions including rain, snow and ice. This position is designated as “Mandatory” during adverse/severe weather conditions and emergency situations and is expected to work according to University and Departmental guidelines.
-Must be able to develop and maintain effective relationships with others in order to encourage and support communication, teamwork and facilitate work.
- Must be able to work independently or on a team, with or without close supervision and deal effectively with various groups, clients, or individuals being served.
-Must be able to communicate effectively with customers, employees, supervisors/managers and the general public.
-Must be able to understand and follow both oral and written instructions, directions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.
- Ability to turn in maintenance requests and perform computer functions including but not limited to sending and receiving emails, performing on-line training, checking building schedules, completing an on-line timesheet, etc.
-Respond to radio calls and emergency situations as needed.
-Assist with Building unlocking/locking and raising/lowering flags at HFR as needed. Report any door that cannot be unlocked/locked to immediate supervisor. Lock windows as directed.
-Must have a valid North Carolina Driver’s License.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants with a high school education and diploma or General Education Diplomas (GED). Previous knowledge of large building cleaning practices and use of industrial type cleaning equipment is also preferred.

Please note: Temporary employees are paid bi-weekly on an hourly basis and do not receive benefits.
