Academic Advisor I
DescriptionThe Academic Advisor I, at the School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management, is responsible for providing comprehensive academic advising services to students and assisting them in making decisions affecting their academic progress relative to interpretation of the University's and School’s relevant academic policies and pertinent guidelines. Responsibilities include: meeting with students on a one-to-one and group basis to discuss and disseminate information regarding curriculum requirements, academic policy, and other issues as they arise; recommending approval or non-approval on matters affecting student status, graduation, withdrawal, reinstatement, re-enrollment, awards, and course selection; developing programs that will support students having academic difficulties or who are on probation; designing new programs that will engage faculty in advising issues and decision making at the school level; maintaining academic records, reviewing and evaluating transcripts, and interpreting relevant University policy as appropriate; serving as liaison between students and faculty, staff, and administrators for the expeditious resolution of administrative problems; assisting with the coordination of the New Student Orientation, graduation clearance and diploma ceremony activities, and providing direct advising services during New Student Orientation, as necessary. In addition, the incumbent will participate and assist with the creation and maintenance of an academic advising website and participate in the development, planning and implementation of school recruiting functions. Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education & Experience:
Master's degree and at least six months related experience. At least six months advising experience in an academic setting in higher education.
Required Skills & Abilities:*Ability to advise, assess and evaluate curricular needs for students to ensure correct development towards graduation standards.*Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills; along with the ability to effectively interact with a diverse group of students, faculty and staff.*Demonstrated ability to maintain a positive and objective client service approach and attitude even when confronted with difficult, highly emotional students or parents in advising and counseling situations.*Ability to prioritize well and focus on completion of tasks and objectives while under stress or demanding work schedule.*Knowledge and use of personal computers for internet research and database management.*Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.*Proficiency in Google documents, surveys, spreadsheets, and forms.*Ability to travel locally to off-site meetings and events. PREFERRED:*Experience with BANNER (Self-Service/Internet Native).
