Senior Director of Communications and Events

Requirements

Georgetown University's School of Continuing Studies (SCS) is seeking a Senior Director of Communications and Events. This position is situated in the Office of the Dean, reporting to the Chief of Staff at SCS and working closely with the Dean. This position manages a team of three staff members.

The Senior Director of Communications and Events will have three primary functions at the School:

First, this role leads the SCS's work to communicate with internal stakeholders (current students, faculty, staff, and alumni) and external stakeholders (non-SCS Georgetown University offices/departments, the general public, and the media) on non-marketing related content. This includes overseeing a team that is responsible for both the channel selection and message development for school-wide communications; developing strategies for promoting news and events at the School; disseminating critical emergency and operational messages; and, representing the School's interests to media, community partners, and Georgetown University. This role also crafts/oversees executive communication on behalf of the Dean of the School of Continuing Studies, including remarks, presentations, quotes for the media, and messages to the community.

Second, this role will oversee the internal events team at SCS. SCS hosts 150+ events per year, led by an Assistant Director of Events and an Events coordinator. This role will manage that team on a day-to-day basis, supporting the strategy, protocol, and execution of all events.

Third, this role will support the development of projects and initiatives of strategic importance to SCS. This may include: developing relationships with SCS alumni; collaboration with SCS faculty on new partnerships that may require Dean's Office support; special projects stemming from the work of the Dean; or, work with Advancement to develop fundraising opportunities at SCS.

Qualifications
  • Master's degree strongly preferred, ideally in communications and/or business.
  • Five (5) years of work experience leading and managing communications.
  • Experience working in a large-scale higher education operation preferred.
  • Demonstrable ability to cultivate relationships with external partners and facilitate strategic partnerships.
  • Demonstrable ability to craft a communications strategy and successfully implement it for a large organization.
  • Advanced knowledge of all Microsoft Office Products and Google apps.
  • Familiarity with CRM software, web design software, etc.
  • Excellent understanding of writing styles and formats (APA, etc.).
