Essential Job Duties

The Small Animal Emergency Service (SAES) Technician provides technical assistance to the Small Animal Emergency Service in the Randall B. Terry Companion Animal Medical Center (TC). The SAES Technician will act as the patient care and service coordination technician for the department, providing unique internal and external customer service, technical assistance, data collection, and patient care. The position interacts with both private owners, as well as referring veterinarians (rDVM) through e-mail and phone communications. The SAES Technician is the primary point of contact for client check in, patient admitting, updates, scheduling, and questions. The position interacts with internal services and their respective staff, clinicians, and students.

  • This position provides patient admitting into the unit for hospitalization and communicates with students, staff, and clinicians to receive the most up to date information regarding presenting problem, diagnostics being performed as well as projected plan of care for the animal. The SAES Technician provides all initial triage care for patients during emergency situations, including history from owner, physical exam, information gathering and relaying to clinician. This individual performs various technical procedures including: post-operative support and monitoring, intravenous catheter placement for both short and long term vein access, venipuncture, IV injections, wound management, drug administration (IV, Oral, Subcutaneous), bandage care, blood transfusion administration, emergency intervention, ECG monitoring, abdominal ultrasound, routine and emergency radiographs, anesthesia, and surgical support and various other routine diagnostic testing.
  • The SAES Technician performs diagnostic blood and urine testing, SNAP tests, drug screening tests, venous blood gases in the in-house laboratory. This role also provides surgical assistance for OR cases as well as minor surgical procedures, in preparing patients, scrubbing, shaving, acting as surgical nurse, and operating specific surgical and anesthetic equipment. This position manages all internal billing for individual patients being housed in SAES and the associated charges with hospitalization, technical procedures, surgical procedures, anesthetic procedures, radiographic procedures and treatments performed.
  • The individual in this role provides excellent patient care by applying full knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, pharmacology, specialized equipment usage, and specialized drug administration. They complete specialized treatments in an accurately and timely fashion. The SAES Technician works proactively to keep patients clean and comfortable. This position prepares and assists with complex procedures including chest tap, ECG monitoring and interpretation, emergency CPCR, venous and arterial cut down, auto transfusion, chest tube placement, nasal oxygen tube placement, and various other routine and emergency diagnostic testing and procedures.
  • The SAES Technician is responsible for supervising, coaching, teaching, orienting and evaluating all senior veterinary students as well as post-doctoral interns and residents regarding excellent patient care and technical procedures. Records a variety of data relating to patient care and treatments, and service related communications. Provides quick and accurate information regarding each patient, acting as the liaison between service and other departmental technicians. Is proficient in entering data into electronic medical record. Maintains a clean working environment to ensure Infectious Disease standards are followed and infection is not spread. Handles all medical/biological and infectious waste appropriately. Follows all radiation safety, OSHA, and Environmental Health and Safety standards. Keeps all necessary equipment in clean and working order and has all necessary and appropriate stocked supplies available for procedures and daily patient husbandry.

Minimum Experience/Education

Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure.

Departmental Required Skills

  • Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.

  • Desire to teach 4th-year veterinary students.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
At least 3 years of previous veterinary technician experience, preferably in an emergency and critical care setting.

Licensed/Registered/Certified by any state Graduation from an AVMA fully accredited two- or four-year Veterinary Technician program.
