Ideal Candidate Statement

The Ohlone College Director for Student Life ideal candidate is a seasoned student affairs professional and leader with the experience to develop, implement and direct a comprehensive approach to achieve the goals, objectives, policies and priorities for Student Life. The successful candidate will possess strong interpersonal communication, time management, and budgeting skills along with the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and students across the campus community.

The ideal candidate must have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and have the ability to model great leadership. This person will also provide counsel and support services on a consistent basis. The ideal candidate will be a visionary leader who will inspire students to achieve their goals in a professional and timely manner.

The ideal candidate will foster a positive work environment and will be committed to working collaboratively with the faculty, staff, administration and students to execute relevant programs and activities that enhance the student experience and provide meaningful student development.

Job Description Summary

Under the direction of the Vice President- Student Services, plan, organize, and direct the development and implementation of Student Life department goals, objectives, policies and priorities; lead the development of creative programming for students; develop and manage wrap-around services (i.e. food pantry, self-care supplies, clothes closet, etc.) to support at-risk populations; serve as the designated advisor of the Associated Students of Ohlone College (ASOC); manage the department budget, grants associated with insecurity services, the student activity fee, and the Associated Students accounts; supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned personnel.

Candidate must possess a commitment to diversity and inclusion as well as experience leading and executing student diversity programs. Candidate must be comfortable with working with diverse backgrounds i.e. race, gender, socioeconomic, ability, LGBTQIA, etc. This position requires some nights and weekends.

Essential Duties

Plan, organize, and direct the development and implementation of Student Life department goals, objectives, policies and priorities; identify resource needs; recommend and implement policies and procedures.

Direct and develop the preparation of proposals, plans and applications for the funding of programs including student events and activities, the food pantry, self-care station; implement new programs and monitor services; evaluate program progress and assure the disbursement of services; prepare reports relating to cost analysis and program efficiency and effectiveness.

Serve as the designated advisor of the Associated Students and Interclub Council (ICC), community service agencies, and other institutions of higher education related to Student Life programs; serve as a technical resource to students regarding College policies and procedures; attend all executive and general meetings of the ASOC.

Review and enforce compliance of ASOC representatives’ eligibility to hold office; oversee the annual ASOC election process.

Manage Associated Students accounts; lead students in the development of budgets; review and authorize expenditures and budget transfers; coordinate the investment of Associated Student funds; monitor trust accounts for campus organizations and co-curricular funds; advise ASOC and student clubs in the development of fundraising activities.

Prepare and conduct trainings for faculty advisors related to the ICC handbook, methods for fundraising and overseeing student club funds, developing student leaders and other topics relating to organizational and student development; provide coaching, mediation and intervention services to students’ clubs as appropriate.

Oversee the planning and execution of student sponsored activities and programs; serve as the designated advisor to the ASOC.

Supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; interview and select employees and recommend transfers, reassignment, termination and disciplinary actions.

Provide technical expertise, information and assistance to the Vice President regarding assigned functions; assist in the formulation and development of policies, procedures and programs; develop and implement goals and objectives, policies and procedures for the Department.

Plan, organize and implement long and short-term programs and activities designed to develop assigned programs and services.

Develop and prepare the annual preliminary budget for the Department; analyze and review budgetary and financial data; control and authorize expenditures in accordance with established limitations.

Direct the preparation and maintenance of a variety of narrative and statistical reports, records and files related to personnel and assigned activities.

Communicate with other administrators, personnel and outside organizations to coordinate activities and programs, resolve issues and conflicts and exchange information as needed.

Operate a computer and assigned software programs; operate other office equipment as assigned; drive a vehicle to conduct work as assigned.

Attend and conduct a variety of meetings as assigned.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

Any combination equivalent to: Bachelor’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work, Career Development or related field AND five years increasingly responsible experience in Student Services, Counseling, Behavioral Sciences or Student Affairs.

Transcripts issued outside the United States require a course-by-course analysis with an equivalency statement from a certified transcript evaluation service verifying the degree equivalency to that of an accredited institution within the USA. Benefits Statement

Ohlone offers a competitive benefits package. The District participates in a group health plan and offers a variety of medical plans. Dental is offered through Delta Dental, Vision offered through Vision Service Plan (VSP), and Life insurance through UNUM. Below is a list of some of our offerings:

Medical*: Enrollment in medical coverage through the district is optional. For those that choose to enroll in one of the offered medical plans, the District currently provides an allowance of $1,200 per month to offset the cost of the medical benefits premium.

Dental, Vision and Life Insurances: The district provides for and fully pays the premiums for you and your family for dental and vision, and for the employee only premium for life insurance. Enrollment in Dental, Vision and Life insurances are mandatory.

Retirement: Membership in the State Teachers’ Retirement System (STRS) or the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS). Candidates hired on or after January 1, 2013 are subject to restrictions imposed by PEPRA.

Long-term Disability (LTD) and Employee Assistance Program (EAP): The District provides for and fully pays the premiums for long-term disability for you and EAP for you and your family.

Contribution to O.A.S.D.I. (Social Security).

Paid vacation and sick leave.

Paid holidays and district-paid floating personal days.

Longevity pay based on years of service.

A multi-campus single community college district, Ohlone College is located in the southern portion of the San Francisco Bay in California; serving 12,000 students per year. The District has a main campus in the City of Fremont and a campus in the City of Newark.
