Advocacy activities will include (but not be limited to) community engagement and raising awareness about genomic medicine and the importance of participation in research; collaborating with UNC and other educational institutions to improve diversity within the pipeline of trainees who might choose to enter genomic medicine research careers and/or careers in health care involving genetics and genomics; and participating in or leading outreach and educational activities for the Program for Precision Medicine in Health Care.

The Research Associate will contribute to large and small grant applications to support the research and advocacy agenda, including independent grants or fellowships as deemed appropriate by the Research Associate and mentors. Substantial effort will initially be contributed to the NCGENES project, which focuses on recruitment of a diverse study population and utilizes feedback from a community advisory panel; development of an age-based genomic screening program for pediatric patients and the adult-based GeneScreen project being led by the Program for Precision Medicine in Health Care; and forming an overall program for Promoting Advocacy and Research Awareness for Diversity and Inclusion in Genomic Medicine (PARADIGM).
