The Department:The Department of Emergency Medicineseeks motivated applicants for the position of Professional Research Assistant2 (PRA2). This role will engage patients, families, and clinical staff at theUniversity of Colorado Hospital, manage study start-up and documentation forclinical trials, and collaborate with clinical and research teams across thecountry working to improve care of critically ill and injured patients. Theprojects focus on patients in the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unitstoxicologic issues, sepsis, and acute respiratory failure. The ideal candidatewill have experience communicating medical concepts and procedures to people ofall healthcare knowledge levels, collaborate effectively on multidisciplinaryteams, and be highly detail-oriented.


Nature of WORK: The Professional Research Assistant 2 (PRA2)is responsible for routine research activities in support of clinicalstudies.  This position requiresfamiliarity and experience with clinical or laboratory research.  This full-time position may be part of acentral pool of research assistants or work specifically with a singlePrincipal Investigator (PI).

 This position will work independently underthe supervision of a PI, Research Associate, or Senior PRA to conduct clinical researchin the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Colorado AnschutzMedical Campus. The job locations will include the Emergency Department andinpatient units at the University of Colorado Hospital and office buildings on theAnschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado.

 The main duties and responsibilities for thisposition include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Interact directly with studyparticipants to collect data via patient visit/discussion, medical recordreview, surveys, interviews, and/or focus groups. 
  • Manage straightforward researchactivities that are part of larger project from initiation to close (e.g.primary data collection activities – participant visits, data abstraction,survey, interviews, focus group).
  • Interact with industry contacts implementationof clinical studies.
  • Submit IRB applications orcontinuing review reports.
  • Create data management and trackingtools (REDCap, ACCESS, Excel) to support data collection and tracking ofproject/recruitment activities.
  • Carry out straightforward dataanalysis.
  • Participate in and contribute togroup meetings.
  • Basic financial processing ofroutine lab or study associated purchases.
  • Interview study participants,extract relevant data from participant or medical records and enter it into online centralized databases or local data tools.
  • Co-moderate qualitative researchfocus groups.
  • Assist in assembly of manuscriptsfor submission.  Check or add references.
  • Identify, screen, and meet with potential studyparticipants to explain research studies and obtain informed consent.
  •  SupervisionReceived:

    Under the direction of the SrPRA orResearch Associate, the PRA will be assigned various research duties and willreport to the relevant Principal Investigator (PI). 


    Supervision Exercised:The position may supervise studentworkers for specific tasks.

    QualificationsRequired:
    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience plus 2 years relevant experience OR a relevant Master’s degree.  Highly relevant experience may be substituted for a degree on a year for year basis. 

    Applicants mustmeet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.


     Preferred:
    • Master’s degree in research-related discipline
    • Medical background (e.g., EMT/Paramedic, nursing, medical assistant, medical technician)
    • Experience with and understanding of medical terminology
    • At least 2 years experience in clinical research
