Overall Description of Responsibility or Nature of Work

Seeking a part-time (75%), Professional Research Assistant (PRA) to join a research laboratory within the Department of Craniofacial Biology, School of Dental Medicine. The successful candidate will contribute to a project exploring the effect of an antibacterial tooth coating in a mouse model. The overarching goal of the study will be to provide therapeutic directions aimed at the prevention of dental caries.

The PRA will maintain and breed a mouse colony for research. The PRA will also be responsible to oversee feeding of mice with special lab diet and liquid formulations. Practical knowledge of ear tagging for identification of mice is required. The PRA will perform in vitro and in vivo experiments in mice teeth and would be harvesting murine parts for studying metabolic, histologic and genetic responses. Hands-on experience in administration of inhalational and IV anesthetics will be useful.  Additional responsibilities will include creating frozen sections and histological slides for staining, preparing common solutions and stocks, maintaining laboratory databases and placing laboratory orders. The PRA will be provided additional lab-specific hands-on training for additional responsibilities.

The PRA should be highly motivated and able to work independently, but cooperatively, within a research laboratory environment. The position requires exceptional organizational skills, record-keeping abilities and attention to detail. The PRA should be able to clearly and effectively communicate with the research team and is expected to fully participate in laboratory meetings.

QualificationsThe ideal candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years of relevant laboratory research experience. The candidate must be willing to work with laboratory mice and primary cell cultures. Experience with molecular biology techniques such as PCR  and RT-PCR is an advantage. Experience with tissue culture, cloning, immunofluorescence analysis, dissections and/or histology is highly desirable.


Minimum Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in research laboratory setting.
  • Willingness to work with laboratory mice and primary cell cultures.
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques such as PCR is required.
