The department of Advising and Career Development oversees the Advisory Colleges mentoring program, the Intercollegiate College leaders, their sub-committees, as well as Career Development initiatives. Career Development provides presentations and workshops on various programs such as ERAS, Careers in Medicine, CV’s, Personal Statements. The department provides pre-residency and residency one on one counseling service to prepare our students for residency, and manage data for The Match and specialties. Career Development also partners with Career Services and Clinical Education throughout planning and roll out of programs.

Position Overview

Under the director of the Director of Medical Student Success, the Career Development Coordinator will provide extensive, quality career development resources for the TCOM medical student population, with a focus on third year medical students through various formats including individual residency counseling meetings, small and large group presentations, seminars, workshops and information sessions. Additionally, the career development coordinator is responsible for the development and distribution of materials to the TCOM population the center around residency placement and match preparation. Oversees the implementation of the career development curriculum and coordinates collaboration efforts between several departments including TCOM Advisory Colleges Program, TCOM Clinical Education, and HSC Student Affairs Division.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and three (3) years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesPreferred Qualifications

Subject matter expert in resume/curriculum vitae, personal statement and cover letter writing and critique. Ability to use career-counseling techniques to effectively advise students. Interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate complicated and simplified concepts to various audiences in an effective manner. Aptitude to build and maintain fruitful relationships with students, faculty and staff. Widespread knowledge of technical mediums. High level of professionalism and comfort interfacing with diverse audiences from a variety educational and career backgrounds. Results and detailed-oriented with the ability to prioritize and follow through.

Experience in career center setting, preferably in higher education. Experience with advising and/or career counseling. Program development and implementation. Background and career placement. Skilled in website management. Advanced skills in office product software.

•Assists with program development and implementation of career development curriculum to TCOM students, with focus on third year medical students. Provide quality residency counseling & ensure residency-counseling resources are available and accessible to all TCOM students.


•Offer guidance that is personalized to each student’s [portfolio] to maximize their match success in OMS year III.


•Track and evaluate career development activities.


•Conduct Personal Statement Workshops and Reviews.


•Conduct presentations and develop workshops that highlight key topics related to the residency application and match guidance.


•Collaborate with other departments such as the HSC Career Center, TCOM Clinical Education, TCOM Advisory Colleges and the Center for Academic Performance to ensure any information in regards to a student’s GME journey is accurate and consistent with the TCOM Career Development office.


•Maintain TCOM Career Development media platforms such as Canvas and Webpage.


•Perform other duties as assigned.
