Overview

The Office of Sustainability mission is to cultivate sustainability as foundational in Princeton's campus ethos. This Assistant Director position reports to the Director and manages academic engagement and Campus-as-Lab (CAL) initiatives. The program functions at the nexus of operational, educational and research activities that result in the advancement of hands-on learning and applied sustainability. The Assistant Director serves as a highly collaborative leader and member of the office team toward achieving Sustainability Action Plan goals, by leveraging team strengths and through academic and operational partnerships. Additionally you will function as the organizational and strategic team lead for a portfolio of projects in the Academic Engagement and CAL Initiatives program areas. This coordination includes engagement of faculty, staff and students in opportunities related to capital projects and campus lands, management of CAL-related data sources and active promotion of their use, as well as raising the visibility and helping scale the impact of effective CAL projects across campus and beyond.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate targeted academic outreach to encourage research and teaching projects that advance progress toward the aggressive campus Sustainability Action Plan goals and that utilize any aspect of the campus physical, social or organizational environment, including major renovations, habitat renewal, and the Capital Plan.
  • Identify focused operational and non-academic CAL opportunities, and actively promote.
  • Manage review of CAL-related funding proposals, advise students in proposal design/budget development/practical timelines, manage data-access processes, track and report on projects and outcomes, collaborate with research and administrative fund managers outside of the Office of Sustainability.
  • Develop information resources for staff, students and faculty seeking CAL research opportunities, and assure that CAL projects are visible when active.
  • Assure that programs are strategic, effectively managed, focused within Office and institutional priorities, and advance potentially repeatable and scalable sustainability solutions.
  • Successfully manage expectations across the very different cultures and processes in the academic and operational arenas, including engagement with faculty potentially years ahead of project initiation.
  • Manage related budgets, in the context of the overall office operating budget and office-managed gift funds.
  • Work closely with existing campus data management programs and platforms to facilitate easy access to high-demand data and information sources for internal planning, research or coursework purposes.
  • Develop a program for information and data management that supports our reporting requirements to institutional leadership, higher education and the public; effectively captures the outcomes from all active CAL research efforts; and serves as a source of high-quality information to accelerate the application of repeatable/scalable practices.
  • Supervise the S.C.R.A.P. (Sustainable Composting Research at Princeton) Lab program and associated staff, and CAL interns as needed.
  • Collegial and effective partnerships and collaboration with other members of the Office team.


Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with 10 years strongly related experience.
  • Ability to lead office-produced publications, and successfully translate sustainability objectives across disciplines.
  • Demonstrated community engagement skills in a complex and diverse social environment.
  • Demonstrated understanding and practice of team and partner collaboration.
  • Proven track record of positive contributions to team dynamics and morale, supporting colleagues in a highly motivated and ever-evolving environment.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy, and ability to interact professionally and effectively across a broad range of disciplines and constituents.
  • Ability to clearly define project roles and responsibilities and demonstrate strong program management skills.
  • Interest in and experience working with students.
  • Experience working in both research and applied/operational/planning environments.
Preferred qualifications

  • Advanced degree with three to five years related experience.
  • Experience working in higher education.
  • Experience working in an applied sustainability program or field.
