The School of Music at Western Carolina University, part of the David Orr Belcher College of Fine and Performing Arts, invites applications for the Carol Grotnes Belk Distinguished Professor in Music Education. The ideal candidate will be a nationally or internationally recognized authority in music education whose vision and expertise will guide a long-established and well-respected music education program into the next phase of its growth.
The Belk Distinguished Professor will be responsible for guiding a number of possible initiatives, including but not limited to establishing a program founded on equity, diversity, and inclusion; establishing Western Carolina University as a nationally-known leader in music education; redesigning and expanding the music education curriculum, including possible graduate programs; and working to assure a rigorous assessment program for all music education courses.
This is a full-time, twelve-month tenure-track position to begin August 1, 2021. Appointment will be made at the rank of Professor. Area of specialization is flexible; however, the ideal candidate will complement the current faculty’s curricular and scholarly strengths and will be committed to music education as both a practical and academic discipline. Salary is highly competitive, and enhanced by an endowment fund to support the program.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Teach undergraduate courses in music education in the candidate’s areas of expertise contingent upon the School of Music’s needs (e.g., Music Technology, Music in Elementary School; Music in Middle School, Instrumental Methods, Choral Methods, and internship supervision). Other potential teaching areas include courses within the Professional Education Sequence as needed and in collaboration with the College of Education and Allied Professions. Candidates are sought who demonstrate the desire to explore inclusive relationships with populations across the region, forge transdisciplinary connections with departments and programs across the University, and establish positive working relationships with music educators in the state and throughout the country.
2. Pursue a well-articulated agenda of scholarly productivity. The candidate should demonstrate an established record of scholarship in music education with the potential for developing an ongoing program of innovative research with national and international reach.
3. Contribute to the School of Music’s educational, research, and outreach missions; participate in committees, advising, and recruiting activities; and collaborate in the ongoing work of Music Education, the School of Music, and the David Orr Belcher College of Fine and Performing Arts.
Evidence of innovative teaching that, for example, explores the nexus between music education and other disciplines, applies new models of music learning and learning environments, or examines music education’s role in preparing professional musicians.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated strengths in one or more of the following areas: Adult and Community Music Education; Affective Response; Assessment; Children with Exceptionalities; Creativity; Early Childhood Music; Gender and Sexuality; Instructional Strategies; Learning and Development; Perception and Cognition; Philosophy; Popular Music Education; or Social Sciences.Minimum Qualifications
1. Doctorate in Music Education.
2. Three or more years of successful Pre-K to 12 public/private school teaching.
3. Evidence of excellence in teaching at the post-secondary level.
4. An established research agenda and record of publications in music education with national/international dissemination.
5. Hold or be eligible for State of North Carolina Professional Educator’s License Music K-12.
1. Experience leading a collegiate music education program.
2. Significant university-level teaching experience.
3. A substantial portfolio of professional activity, including leadership position(s) in national or international organizations devoted to music education.
4. Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to work collaboratively.
