Departmental Overview

Founded in 1943, the School of Public Health has a 75+ year history of defending health as a human right in our local and global communities. We are fueled by a deep commitment to social and environmental justice, scientific inquiry and discovery, and community-engaged action.

The School's mission is to improve population health, especially for the most vulnerable. We do this by preparing the next generation of public health changemakers through preeminent educational programs; transformational research that sheds new light on the public health threats and opportunities of today and tomorrow; and by translating new discoveries into practice through partnerships that address the critical health needs and inequities in our diverse communities. The School is a world-renowned institution and widely regarded as the birthplace of social epidemiology and community-based participatory research. Our research broadly focuses on the interaction of biological, behavioral and environmental determinants of health.

The School's more than 18,000 graduates can be found working throughout the world, both in the public and private sectors, tackling urgent public health problems such as climate change, pandemics, chronic diseases, and social inequality. The School annually enrolls approximately 740 graduate students, including students in the online MPH program, and 425 undergraduate students a year in the upper-division major.

Responsibilities

The Research Data Analyst is responsible for designing and implementing data analyses for Dr. Ahern's research projects, in collaboration with Dr. Ahern and co-Investigators. This position involves analyzing and interpreting analyses of health data, including managing a large dataset of statewide health data for California, and analyzing these data with statistical methods that include standard regression, propensity-score based methods, and substitution estimation methods. This position also involves developing simulations in the programming language R that operationalize a range of research study design and analysis options, and assess the relative performance (in terms of bias and variance) of the design and analysis combinations. This position will also involve preparation of analysis results for publications, presentations, and proposals.

Key Responsibilities include:
  • Plans long-term health research studies, including the preparation of proposals, and determination of sampling and statistical procedures.
  • Manages health data, and implements and interprets analyses of health data with statistical methods.
  • Develops simulations that correspond to a range of study design and analysis options, and assess relative performance (in terms of bias and variance) of the design and analysis combinations.
  • Prepares analysis results for publications and presentations
  • May supervise research analysis of students, support staff and/or lower level analysts.

Required Qualifications

Knowledge and Skills
  • Thorough knowledge of research function.
  • Advanced skills associated with statistical analysis and systems programming.
  • Thorough skills in analysis and consultation.
  • Skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing.
  • Research skills at a level to evaluate alternate solutions and develop recommendations.
  • Strong quantitative background.
  • Advanced knowledge of R, as well as SAS and/or STATA programming languages - knowledge of ArcGIS (or other GIS software) in addition would be advantageous.
  • Data management and analysis experience in the field of epidemiology, or related research field.
  • Research experience with statistical methods that include standard regression, propensity-score based methods, and substitution estimation methods.
  • Experience with manuscript and proposal writing.
  • Must be self-motivated, work independently or part of a team, able to learn quickly, meet deadlines, and demonstrate problem solving skills.

    Education/Training:
  • Masters or Doctoral degree in related area, such as statistics, biostatistics, or epidemiology, and/or equivalent experience/training
