We are recruiting three data curators for a short-term data-enhancement campaign for the world’s ca. 100,000 museum specimens from this group of just over 200 bat species. Much of the time will be spent georeferencing (= geocoding) collection localities, but time will also be spent standardizing taxonomic names, collector names, linkages to additional resources, and other data.

The duration of the appointment can range from 3 months full-time to 6 months half-time, and the appointment is expected to involve remote work in a space supplied by the curator on a personal computer and internet connection supplied by the curator.Qualifications We are looking for data curators with the following skills, experience, and knowledge. We’d love to hear from you if this list wholly or partly describes you and you are looking for a short-term job starting in September or October.

- Familiarity with best practices for georeferencing specimen collection localities. We prefer familiarity gained through > 1 month experience georeferencing localities following the Georeferencing Best Practices Guide (Chapman and Wieczorek, 2020).

- Familiarity with software for georeferencing specimen collection localities. We prefer familiarity gained through use of GEOLocate’s Collaborative Georeferencing (CoGe) platform or similar implementations of GIS.

- Familiarity with the physical and political geography of Asia, Africa, Europe, and/or Australia. We prefer familiarity with aspects of those region’s geography relevant to bat habitats (e.g., cave systems).

- Familiarity with taxonomic practice. We prefer familiarity with bat taxonomy.

- Ability to carefully and efficiently georeference and curate data at a computer 40 hours per week for 3 months. We prefer ability to perform work 8 hours/day during the work-week. However, well qualified applicants seeking part-time work that extends as long as 20 hours per week for 6 months will be competitive.

- Demonstrated ability to work well in a setting remote from a supervisor. We prefer familiarity with the use of Slack as a project communication tool.

- Experience curating data that follows the Darwin Core and Darwin Core Extension standards.

- Excellent organization and time management skills.

- Strong attention to details and strong proofreading skills.

- Ability to work well individually and with a team.Preferred Bachelor’s degree in a related topic is preferred.Contact Info Austin Mast
