Position Summary

MSU Law’s history dates to 1891 when the Detroit College of Law was established to serve the residents of Detroit. In 1995, the Detroit College of Law affiliated with and relocated to Michigan State University in East Lansing, providing students with access to a wealth of resources and opportunities while preserving the school’s student-centric culture, and providing faculty with the advantages of a world-class research institution. From 1995 to 2018, the relationship between MSU and the College of Law became progressively closer, until the leaders of the University and the College of Law decided to pursue full integration, which will be formally completed this summer (2020).

MSU Law seeks an accomplished and innovative leader to serve as its new Dean. The Dean will be a proven leader with strategic acumen and exceptional management skills, spearheading the College into the future in the heart of a global research institution. MSU is a top-tier public research university and is a member of the Association of American Universities. MSU Law is fully accredited by the American Bar Association and is a member of the Association of American Law Schools. Building on a long tradition of research and educational excellence, MSU Law offers students a legal education that challenges their intellect, broadens their experience, and prepares them for a successful and rewarding career.

Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean will provide vision and leadership to the academic and administrative activities of MSU Law; manage its finances and human resources to ensure long-term stability and success; facilitate recruitment and development of exceptional faculty, staff, and students; promote multidisciplinary research and teaching; encourage a collaborative environment of shared governance that promotes and rewards excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service; secure the financial resources required to sustain MSU Law’s successful J.D. and other degree programs; continue to build strong relationships with members of the bench and bar and alumni in Michigan, across the country, and around the world; and serve as a successful partner across the University. MSU Law seeks a Dean with the vision, integrity, intellect, and interpersonal skills necessary to lead the College’s progress in a challenging national environment for legal education. A J.D. or its equivalent is required. Candidates must also possess a record of distinguished accomplishments warranting appointment as a Professor of Law. While no one candidate will embody every quality, the successful candidate will bring many professional qualifications and personal qualities to the position, including the following:
