Position Summary(JMC), an undergraduate liberal arts college of public affairs. Madison College, founded in 1967, is one of three residential colleges in the university committed to excellence in undergraduate teaching and close interactions between students and faculty. The college has its own tenure-system faculty of accomplished scholars, and its own curriculum, while also benefiting from the resources, opportunities, substantive breadth, and curricula of a major research university. The college’s faculty are trained in American studies, anthropology, economics, English literature, history, humanities, philosophy, political science, science and technology studies, and sociology. The college offers four interdisciplinary majors, Comparative Cultures and Politics, International Relations, Political Theory and Constitutional Democracy, and Social Relations and Policy, and participates in multiple cross-unit degree programs offered within the university. The Dean is JMC’s chief executive officer and reports to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Dean will provide vision and humane leadership to JMC, overseeing academic programs, financial affairs, development, student success, personnel, program evaluation, community engagement, and facilities of the college. In addition, the Dean of the college has unique responsibilities fostering community within a residential college. The Dean represents the college within the university and in interactions with the college’s highly engaged and accomplished students and alumni. Applicants must hold an earned doctorate or equivalent advanced degree with an established record of scholarly and teaching accomplishments and meet the standards for appointment at the rank of professor (with tenure) in the university. They must demonstrate a commitment to the college’s mission, administrative experience, and effective and engaged communication skills. Candidates should hold an earned doctorate or equivalent advanced degree with an established record of scholarly and teaching accomplishments and meet the standards for appointment at the rank of professor (with tenure) in the university.

Desired QualificationsAs a key member of the University’s leadership, the next Dean will bring the requisite experience and skills to build upon and shape the College’s strengths following a long-serving leader. Ideally, the successful candidate shall have an understanding and appreciation for the distinctive opportunities that a residential college setting can provide for faculty, staff and students. They must demonstrate a commitment to the college’s mission, administrative experience, and effective and engaged communication skills. The next Dean shall be able to work across disciplinary boundaries, bring a strong commitment and understanding of student recruitment, retention, and placement, as well understanding how to shape a compelling narrative that will continue to support the recruitment and retention of a diverse group of faculty and staff. The successful candidate shall lead with bold advocacy and inclusivity. While no one candidate will embody every quality, the next Dean will bring many professional qualifications and personal qualities to the position, including the following:• Demonstration of leadership experience, meaningful accomplishment, and career success appropriate to the Dean’s role;• Advanced interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with the ability to articulate the College’s strengths and advocate for its needs;• Demonstrated understanding of the College’s residential educational programs and a commitment to the highest standards of academic excellence;• Demonstrated vision, creativity, and resourcefulness;• Demonstrated abilities in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion;• Experience with interdisciplinary curriculum and inspiring new initiatives with an interdisciplinary approach;• Demonstrated commitment to teaching, faculty development and scholarship;• Ability to involve and engage faculty, students, staff, alumni, employers, and donors;• Successful record of, or aptitude for, developing external sources of funding and cultivating donors and alumnae/alumni;• Ability to facilitate collaboration among professional and support staff and University transdisciplinary programs and divisions;• Ability to build consensus and share decision making;• Demonstrated ability in management and administration, including strategic planning, program development and evaluation, and financial management;• Familiarity with, and appreciation for, the use of technology in creating and delivering outstanding academic programs.Required Application Materials
