Job Summary:

In-class assistants and lab assistants are hired to ensure equal access to educational opportunities for students with disabilities. In-class assistants and lab assistants aid students with disabilities with the physical mechanics and dexterity requirements of class activities (e.g., lifting, pouring, writing, typing, etc.). In-class assistants and lab assistants will attend the class in which the student with a disability is enrolled and must be available to attend the entire class session. In-class assistants and lab assistants cannot be enrolled in the same course level of the students they are assisting. In-class assistants and lab assistants will follow directions provided by the student with a disability and will not contribute to the content of the course or be responsible for teaching the material to the student with a disability.

• Good academic standing with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
• Ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality of the student
• Ability to express verbally what is seen in a descriptive manner
• Effective communication skills
• Responsible, professional and dependable
• Respectful of different learning styles
• Ability to follow multi-step directions

Desired Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Previous experience in and knowledge of the subject area preferred

Essential Duties:

These services are individually designed and based on the specific needs of each student.
1. Read aloud academically required materials.
2. Write down information as dictated by the student.
3. Describe visual information.
4. Assist with completing in-class assignments on paper and on the computer as described by the student.
5. Adjust/move lab equipment, lift lab materials, pour lab materials, and perform other lab duties as described by the student.
6. Will perform only those tasks directed by the student.
7. Are used as a tool, not a teacher or tutor.
8. Will not prompt or guide a student in performing a lab/class task.
9. Will not explain nor interpret lab/class assignments/questions.
10. Must follow all class/lab safety procedures.

Working at Elgin Community College 

Elgin Community College offers 2,000 courses to choose from and services that fit the lifestyles of busy adult learners. Every semester, 6,000 returning adult students take classes at ECC. Their average age is 28, and 80 percent of them are taking one or two courses per semester.

Skilled, professional sales representatives work directly with companies and area employers to assure that presentations developed are custom designed. Instructors with real-world know-how, experienced at working with adults, teach the classes. Applicable state training incentives are used to keep programs cost-effective.

Locations

ECC Campus: Thirteen buildings grace a picturesque 217-acre campus. It's a modern network of buildings where learning is enhanced by the latest equipment, Internet and wireless access and computer instruction across the curricula. ECC is outfitted for the future and continues to grow to meet the ever-changing needs of our students.

Streamwood Center: In 1998, the college and Village of Streamwood remodeled the lower level of Village Hall to include computer and general purpose classrooms. Classes offered there make it easier for those who live in the eastern portions of ECC’s district to attend college.

Satelitte Campuses: ECC holds classes throughout the northwest suburbs at off-campus locations scattered across the district. Whether it is a medical center where ECC nursing students assist in patient care, a fire station where students transform into prospective lifesavers, or a nearby forest preserve where bird watching takes over on Saturday mornings, ECC classes are somewhere nearby.
