Department Overview:

Under the supervision of the Director of Information Security and Infrastructure, the System Engineer I – Storage Services helps to support and maintain the technical infrastructure, including storage services, virtual services, central server services, security operations, desktop deployment services, database services, and identity services. They help to ensure 24x7 availability of technical infrastructure through redundancy and technical support. Helps with solutions to problems that may arise in an expeditious, efficient, and timely manner. Responsible for performing job duties in accordance with the mission, vision and values of the University of Central Oklahoma.

Position Overview:

Assist with design, development, and engineering activities on new and existing systems. Perform tests, simulations, and analysis. Recommend design improvements and changes. Troubleshoot system issues. Research, evaluate, and apply new development methods. Develop recommendations for management regarding implementation of storage systems/services additions and/or enhancements. Specialization in two or more of these areas Storage/Backups, Virtual Infrastructure, Microsoft Servers, RHEL servers, or Cisco security and network equipment.

Department Specific Essential Job Functions:

  • Performs daily routine operational task (i.e. Storage and File Share Management, Print Queue Setup, Backups, Restores, Disaster Recovery testing of file integrity, etc.).
  • Helps to recommend policies and develop procedures for systems and services.
  • Helps recommend strategic storage planning.
  • Serves as a Tier III escalation point for Systems and Applications teams.
  • Evaluates and/or make purchasing recommendations and help to create funding request.
  • Responsible for multiple service and/or system including complex systems.
  • Develops and maintains documentations for systems.
  • Manage storage allocation, space, and replication strategies.
  • Defines, and determines system requirements and specifications as they relate to complex projects, ensuring system hardware and software are compatible and ideal for a given situation.
  • Provides direction for the development, design, and systems integration for functional areas from definition phase through implementation.
  • Recommends data storage, backup and recovery strategies.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves problems and issues with enterprise system software and/or hardware. Performs root cause analysis post-incident.
  • Assists in creation of, configures, updates, maintains, and tests disaster recovery solution for mission critical servers and services.
  • Preforms other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Qualifications / Experience Required:

Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience that provides knowledge of and exposure to fundamental theories, principles, and concepts. Requires the application of expertise in a chosen field to achieve results. Minimum 3 years of experience managing, configuring, optimizing, and maintaining enterprise class storage appliances such as NetApp, Equallogic, and Compellent. Extensive knowledge in iSCSI, FC, VMWare, and UCS compute

Qualifications / Experience Preferred:

  • Minimum 4 years of experience as a Windows Systems Administrator with demonstrated knowledge to use appropriate technology tools to perform day-to-day administration tasks (such as backup, restore, failover, log interpretation and performance monitoring) for storage appliances and servers.
  • Four or more years of experience in customer support, data center operations, system administration or related area.
  • Experience with scripting (i.e., PowerShell, Python)
  • Experience with cloud service providers like AWS or Azure
  • Experience with MySQL or MS SQL
  • Familiarity with ITIL concepts and the ability to follow existing Problem, Change, and Incident Management procedures.
  • CompTIA Security + or equivalent certification is highly preferred.

Knowledge / Skills / Experience Preferred:

Must possess strong customer service and interpersonal skills. Strong analytical, organization, and collaboration skills. Ability to work well under pressure, handling multiple tasks and balancing multiple objectives while consistently ensuring the timely completion of priority objectives. Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical users. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to author procedures, knowledgebase articles, and proposals. Advanced working knowledge of and experience with the design, installation and technical support of enterprise systems in a large environment. Adheres to and complies with UCO’s shared values and the Office of Information Technology’s Code of Ethics. This position is on-call 24x7x365 and requires the successful candidate to have high-speed internet access to their residence, and maintain a smartphone on which to receive telephone calls, email and SMS messages from servers and authorized OIT personnel.
