Description:

The Department of Chemical and Physical Sciences at the University of Toronto Mississauga invites applications for a full time teaching stream position in the area of Chemistry, with a preference for Analytical, Inorganic, or Physical/Computational Chemistry. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream with an expected start date of July 1, 2021, or shortly thereafter. The University of Toronto is a tri–campus entity and the successful candidate will also have a close relationship with the Department of Chemistry on the St. George campus and the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences on the Scarborough campus.

Applicants must have earned a PhD in Chemistry, or a related area, by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter. We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement our existing departmental strengths in biological and protein chemistry, medicinal chemistry, biophysical chemistry, and organometallic chemistry. The successful candidate will join a dynamic community engaged in pedagogic scholarship. Candidates must have teaching expertise in a degree granting program at the undergraduate level, including lecture and laboratory preparation/delivery, curriculum development, and mentorship of undergraduate students. A demonstrated keen interest in developing novel approaches to engaging undergraduates of all academic backgrounds is required. Candidates must also demonstrate a commitment to exemplary pedagogical practices and teaching-related scholarly activities.

The successful candidate will be required to deliver courses in introductory undergraduate general chemistry and upper year courses depending on curricular needs and their area of specialization. They are also expected to supervise undergraduate research projects. The candidate will additionally engage in pedagogical advancement, and lead positive change in our educational programs that represent the evolving needs for chemistry, science, and technology in society in Canada and around the world. It is expected that such creative educational development activities will be communicated to the broader teaching community (nationally and internationally) through conference presentations and publications.

Evidence of excellence in teaching and pedagogical inquiry may be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences as documented on the CV; strong letters of reference; and a teaching dossier to include a strong teaching statement, sample course syllabi and course materials, and undergraduate teaching evaluations. The teaching dossier should highlight any significant teaching accomplishments such as awards, teaching grants secured, workshops led, presentations at conferences, or superlative course evaluations.

The teaching dossier must include (in the following order): (i) a statement of teaching philosophy that is linked to evidence of excellent pedagogical practice and includes a vision for future pedagogical development work and scholarship by the candidate; (ii) sample course syllabi (either of courses delivered by the candidate, or planned for the future); (iii) sample course materials specifically developed by the candidate; and (iv) undergraduate teaching evaluations, and associated digests.

Applicants must provide the name and contact information of three references. At least one referee must primarily address the candidate’s teaching.
