Job Description:

We invite applicants for a Subject Matter Expert position, specializing in digital humanities and new media design. We seek a candidate who specializes in one or more of the following areas: digital and computational humanities, digital media studies, critical computation and coding, applied information design, ethical and sociopolitical dimensions of digital technologies, and leveraging digital tools and data for civic engagement, equity, and justice.The Subject Matter Expert: Digital Humanities & Information Design position is a part-time position that reports to the Academic Program Director of Liberal Studies and Communications.


The Subject Matter Expert will collaborate with the Academic Director of Liberal Studies and Communications and an instructional designer to develop curricula for the following courses for the new Liberal Studies major in Digital Information Design and Society.


  • HUM218: Introduction to Digital Humanities and Information Design: This course provides a basic introduction to the application of digital and computational technology to the study of the humanities, arts, and social sciences. Students will engage with theories and practices of the digital and computational humanities and the process of using computing skills towards the study of humanities-based issues and topics. This course will integrate foundational liberal arts skills of critical thinking, analysis, and written communication with key understandings of digital technology concepts such as data representation and visualization, digital archives, mapping, and text-mining. Students will be introduced to the process of digital engagement with cultural materials and reflect on the practical application of digital techniques to sociocultural inquiry.
  • LAR210: Introduction to Design Thinking: This course introduces students to foundational principles of design thinking as a tool for innovative problem-solving and strategy development across industries. Students will learn about different methodologies for developing and applying empathy-based solutions to user and stakeholder challenges. Students will engage in exercises and projects in which they model the different steps of design thinking, including: identifying user challenges, conducting empathy fieldwork, brainstorming user-centered solutions based on qualitative and quantitative data, creating prototype concepts, and role-playing end-user testing.
  • HUM318: Research Methods in Digital Humanities and Information Design: This course introduces students to the applications of digital and computational technology and design thinking to humanistic research. Students will learn to use digital research methods to develop and explore strong humanistic research questions, will develop skills in using digital tools to conduct original research, and will analyze the efficacy of a variety of digital research methodologies by critiquing examples of humanities-based research projects that utilize these tools. Students will also learn how to organize and present stories with data, develop charts, analyze and use spatial and network visualizations, and use basic text analysis tools to explore qualitative data.
  • HUM490: Digital Information Design and Society Capstone: This course is intended for students to produce critical and creative projects that apply digital technologies to a field of inquiry in the humanities and/or social sciences. Students will continue to develop their skills in analyzing humanities research questions through digital, computational, and design technologies. Students will develop a research question, develop a research agenda and project plan, and produce a proof of concept for a new digital humanities project. This course will culminate in producing a digital project and a written rationale with theoretical grounding, as well as explanation of practical decisions and applications.

As a member of the curriculum development team, the Subject Matter Expert is responsible for planning course content and assessment strategies. The incumbent will organize and sequence course materials and identify the key skills, competencies, and knowledge students will need to demonstrate mastery. They will be responsible for creating a syllabus, developing course materials, and designing assessments and activities that conform to best practices in the subject area and distance pedagogy.


Essential Functions:


  • Organize the course into modules that include introductions, learning materials, formative activities, and summative assessments.
  • Write learning objectives that support course and program outcomes and generate rubrics to assess student mastery.
  • Find and generate high quality, equity-driven learning materials, such as video lectures, presentation files, multimedia, web resources, journal articles, third-party tools, etc.
  • Craft a student-centered, equity-driven course experience that provides ample opportunity for student-student and student-faculty interaction.
  • Implement templates and standards as provided by the University.
  • Conduct a review of the developed course for quality assurance.


Requirements:


  • Masters degree preferred.
  • College-level and online teaching experience required.
  • Must be able to teach.
  • Previous curriculum development preferred.
  • If you operate a University owned, leased or personal vehicle at any time while performing your duties you must follow all policies and procedures outlined in the Operations Manual. You must have a valid driver's license and must successfully pass the online safe Driving Course and driving record check at time of hire and annually thereafter. Additionally, you must report any driving offense, on or off company time, which causes a loss, suspension, or any other change in your license status. You must report this change within one business day of the offense. You can report this change to the Human Resource Department or your direct supervisor. Failure to do so can lead to disciplinary action, up to and including terminations.
  • Ability to adhere to University policies and procedures.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.

  • Longmeadow, MA - Home to our Residential College, for high school, transfer and International young women; One Day A Week College, for adult women with classes on Saturday; and Graduate College for men and women.
