Job Description:

EDUC 302B Multiliteracies: Reading and Writing the World in the Secondary Classroom

Department: The Teacher Education Department in the School of Education at Mills College is pleased to announce an opportunity for an instructor to teach EDUC 302B Multiliteracies: Reading and Writing the World in the Secondary Classroom for FALL 2020.

Course Description:
In this course, students examine and deepen their understanding of literacy development, beyond decoding and performing timed writing proficiencies. Students explore the many literacies (multiliteracies) our students bring with them, including but limited to multimodal, digital, social, and computational literacies. The course specifically addresses issues related to non-dominant students whose language and literacy practices do not mirror those expected in schools (TPEs 7B). The course also addresses the literacy needs of English Language Learners (BCLAD Standards from Domain 3) speakers of non-dominant varieties of English, students with disabilities, and youth who struggle with developing 21st century literacy skills. Central to this course are sociocultural perspectives on learning. Therefore, students consider how the language and literacy practices of youth mediate learning and development in school and beyond. Students examine the language and literacy resources of youth that are often not leveraged as resources for learning in classrooms.
