Job description

Faculty Position in Field Service - Food Animal Emphasis
School of Veterinary Medicine - New Bolton Center

Location: Kennett Square, PA
Open Date: Jan 21, 2020
Deadline: Dec 19, 2020 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time

The School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Department of Clinical Studies - New Bolton Center invites applications for a faculty position in Field Service (Food Animal Emphasis) in the Academic Clinician Track. New Bolton Center (NBC) is the large animal campus of the University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine, which resides in Chester County, 30 miles southwest of the Philadelphia main campus. The NBC campus location is within a highly active agricultural region of Pennsylvania and the tri-state area, and our practice serves a diverse population of farm animals.

The position effort allocation will include clinical service integrated with teaching, additional didactic and laboratory teaching, and school citizenship. The successful candidate is expected to participate in the clinical and academic program of the section, including didactic and laboratory teaching of students, and training of interns and residents as described below:

  • Clinical service is mainly provided through daily practice typical of ambulatory practice including, but not limited to, primary patient care of production animals (e.g. ruminants and camelids) with a special focus on sheep and goats, which is a growth area in our vicinity. The faculty member would also play a key role in clinical teaching of veterinary students on the Field Service rotation, and also in the pre-clinical curriculum. Clinical teaching, in which this faculty member would play a major role, is integrated into the ambulatory practice during the Field Service rotation. Consultation with other specialists from the New Bolton Center Large Animal Hospital is readily available and welcomed.
  • The AC faculty member will contribute to the didactic curriculum currently comprising over 10 lecture hours, as well over 70 hours of preclinical laboratory (hands-on) experiences, including small group instruction at New Bolton Center's Marshak Dairy. As the curriculum evolves through a re-design process currently underway, the AC faculty member is expected to play a major role in its transition to a curriculum having strong emphasis on early clinical experience. Thus, this faculty position will oversee the development, implementation, and assessment of critical clinical skill sets required for students to demonstrate competency at different milestones throughout their education.
  • School citizenship service is expected through the candidates' willingness to serve as advisor to the PennVet Food Animal Club, student chapters of AABP (Bovine Practitioners) and AASRP (Small Ruminant Practitioners), and ABVP (Practitioners Board) for residents.
  • Although the focus of this position is on clinical service and teaching, the successful candidate will have the opportunity and is encouraged to participate in collaborative clinical research in areas of interest.

The University of Pennsylvania is an EOE. Minorities/Women/Individuals with disabilities/Protected Veterans are encouraged to apply.
