Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Position Summary:

This supports the instructional biology laboratory sections. The position will be assigned to one of the four introductory biology laboratory courses and will cross-train to support all laboratory courses in the BIOL Lab Program. This includes but is not limited to the daily maintenance of multiple laboratory sections, setting up and breaking down laboratory materials, ordering, preparing, and culturing laboratory materials, working with UGA greenhouses and other departments, and maintaining prep notes.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:

Excellent organizational skills. Knowledge of molecular biology techniques,
organismal biology, basic computer skills, strong basic laboratory technical skills. Work independently and trouble shoot problems. Good interpersonal skills and collaborative attitude.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Classroom prep of introductory biology laboratories. This entails setting up and breaking down labs each week including: Planning, scheduling, and placing orders; culturing, collecting, and preparing materials; keeping detailed prep notes with updates of changes; and checking and changing out lab materials to support GLAs’ (Graduate Lab Assistant) teaching of the labs. Assisting with GLA prep sessions by providing safety information and laboratory specific instructions for weekly labs.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Maintenance of records and documentation associated with the teaching laboratory classrooms. This includes cleaning and maintaining equipment (microscopes, spectrophotometers, pipets, etc.), arranging professional service for instruments to be cleaned and calibrated as required. Keeping records of safety data sheets for chemical use and hazardous waste management; providing supervision, safety information, and instructions for student staff; trouble-shooting equipment/supply issues.
