Departmental Overview

UC Berkeley Extension is the continuing education branch of the University of California, Berkeley. Extension offers more than 2,000 courses per year in a variety of subjects both online and in the classroom. Extension's administrative departments and units include student records (transcripts), registration, scheduling, international student services, facilities, financial services, and the cashier's office. In addition to the main Berkeley center, it has responsibility for the maintenance and operation of regional centers in San Francisco (Spear Street), and Belmont and other leased facilities in the San Francisco Bay Area.


Responsibilities
  • Counsels Extension's international students and alumni on career options and opportunities, including customized services for specific populations.
  • Advises prospective students on necessary academic preparation; appropriateness of program as it pertains to the prospective applicant's career goals. Helps clients identify their interests, values, skills, and personalities, and understand how these factors relate to academic/career satisfaction and choices.
  • Develop and manage new Internship options internationally.
  • Manage alumni and corporate relations portfolio.
  • Manage quality processes for career counseling services.
  • Manage interdepartmental communication and relations, Instructor relations and management.
  • Manage schedule creation.
  • Uses standard quantitative and qualitative assessments to help clients assess career goals.
  • Advises students on the job market process, and the standards and norms specific to the student's field of study; and opportunities related to their field of study.
  • Helps students with decision making, goal setting, and identifying internal/external obstacles to obtaining goals.
  • Helps clients identify their interests, values, skills, and personalities, and understand how these factors relate to academic/career satisfaction and choices.
  • Uses standard quantitative and qualitative assessments to help clients assess career goals.
  • Provides guidance to departments/colleges/schools on providing resources to meet students' career needs.
  • Helps with decision making, goal setting, and identifying internal/external obstacles to obtaining goals.
  • Researches, evaluates, and updates written and electronic career and educational resources.
  • Researches and organizes economic and employment trend data, and designs materials for presentation to students.
  • Participates in job market analytics.
  • Plans, designs, and conducts workshops and job fairs and presents programs to meet students' needs.
  • Develops and implements marketing and outreach programs to promote programs and services.
  • Identifies personal crisis situations and refers client to appropriate resources.
  • Maintains and enhances relationships with corporations and other organizations to develop and modify potential employer resources, and promote external relations with the campus relating to career services for students and alumni.
  • Identifies and cultivates potential employers
  • Supervise staff or student assistants.
  • Train and manage team of external career advisors.
  • Manage budgeting and reporting.
  • Manage disciplinary process.

Required Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge of career development theories, adult development theory, counseling process, career decision making, learning styles, and job search techniques.
  • Knowledge of needs assessment theory, processes, and practice, workshop and program design.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn UC programs, career services, employer, alumni, and faculty needs and expectations, recruiting and staffing methods, and employment trends.
  • Ability to design and modify computer applications to meet program needs, problem identification, presentation skills, verbal communication, written communication, and organization skills.
  • Ability to work with people from diverse cultures.

Education/Training:
  • Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience.
