Assistant Professor/Extension Beef Cattle Specialist (Nutrition Management)
The University of Tennessee Department of Animal Science invites applications for a full-time, 12 month, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. Location: Knoxville, TennesseePosition Responsibilities: 85% Extension 15% TeachingMinimum qualifications:•Ph.D. in ruminant nutrition or a related field with a focus on beef cattle management•Demonstrated skills in written and oral communication, data management, and technical writing•Ability and willingness to meet demanding travel requirementsIdeal candidates should demonstrate:•Experience serving diverse audiences•Classroom teaching experience•Ability to develop and deliver effective educational curricula for beef cattle producers, undergraduates, and graduate students•Self-motivation with the ability to achieve measurable results•Positive interpersonal skills with the capability and willingness to work independently as well as part of a teamResponsibilities include:•Independently and collaboratively work with other faculty, UT Extension agents, and key partners to plan, develop, implement and evaluate practical, science-based educational programs for beef cattle nutritional management that will benefit the Tennessee beef cattle industry (Ex: UT Bull Test Station, Tennessee Beef Heifer Development Center, Tennessee Master Beef Producer, and Beef Quality Assurance)•Teach junior-level core nutrition course within the Department of Animal Science (ANSC 330)•Provide continuing education to county UT Extension agricultural agents and provide assistance to the department’s youth livestock programs•Establish and maintain a strong working relationship with key partners in the Tennessee beef industry•Independently or collaboratively conduct applied research projects •Apply for and receive extramural funding (grants, contracts, gifts and fees) to support extension programming, applied research, and teaching that results in scholarly, peer reviewed publications (Extension publications, abstracts and journal articles)•Provide timely and accurate information in response to public requests•Ability and willingness to meet travel requirements•Participate in implementation of the UT Extension Strategic Plan structure as requested•Establish and/or maintain cooperative efforts with Extension specialists at other institutions; both regionally and nationally•Participate in institutional service activities as directed by the Animal Science Department (Ex: committee service and student recruitment)About the Department: The Department of Animal Science is a diverse and fascinating blend of applied and basic life sciences. We are ultimately focused on enhancing the efficiency, profitability and sustainability of domestic animal industries. The department’s activities are accomplished by its 29 faculty members and 15 technical and administrative staff who are located on the Knoxville campus and facilities across Tennessee. Approximately 600 undergraduate students are enrolled in the department’s bachelor’s degree programs with academic concentrations in animal industries, biosciences and pre-veterinary medicine. In addition, there are approximately 30 graduate students enrolled in the department’s MS and PhD programs. Encouraging undergraduate participation in research, creative achievement, and real-world experience is a departmental goal. Extension and research programs in the department serve the areas of animal health and well-being, nutrition, physiological genomics and reproduction. In addition, multidisciplinary and multifunctional dual biomedical and agricultural purpose (animal and human health) programs are conducted with an emphasis on obesity and metabolic complications. Extensive field and animal resources are available through six UT AgResearch and Education Centers throughout Tennessee. In addition, UT Extension leads adult and 4-H youth programs in beef cattle, dairy cattle, goats, equine, poultry, sheep, swine and environmental management. Departmental programs encompass the full range of the land grant university mission (teaching, research and service) and are administered by the Herbert College of Agricultural, UT AgResearch, and UT Extension.
