Spartanburg Methodist College, located in Spartanburg, South Carolina, seeks candidates for a Marketing Communications Specialist position in the Marketing Office, which has played a leading role in SMC’s growth to historic enrollment levels in each of the last four years.

Spartanburg Methodist College, founded in 1911, is a private residential liberal arts institution serving a diverse student population (38% first generation, 52% minority, 59% Pell) within the United Methodist Connection. Since its founding as the first co-op school in the nation, SMC has remained dedicated to its mission to connect education and employment. After over 100 years as an Associate Degree granting institution, the College launched its first bachelor’s degree in 2019. Today, the College’s emphasis on education and employment includes a unique professional development concentration comprised of eight required courses for students seeking associate and bachelor’s degrees.

SMC is growing significantly, adding new programs, and focusing on designing all campus programs to serve its student population intentionally. The Marketing Office works to identify programs to serve traditional and non-traditional students, to support the recruitment of diverse groups of students into these programs and to raise overall awareness of the College and its unique mission among external constituents, including donors. Marketing Communication Specialist Job Description

All employees of Spartanburg Methodist College are entrusted with assisting the College to achieve its vision and mission. Customer focus, college service, and a willingness to assist as needed are expectations of all employees.

Organizational Responsibilities:

The Marketing Communications Specialist reports to the Vice President for Marketing and supervises the work of interns and/or work-study students.

Job Summary:

The Marketing Communications Specialist is an integral member of the Spartanburg Methodist College Marketing Office team and contributes directly to the College’s student recruitment, communication and development goals by creating engaging, informative, persuasive and timely communications across a range of media. The incumbent works collaboratively with a variety of College staff to ensure internal and external communication adheres to the SMC brand voice and personality and is valuable and relevant to various audiences.

Major Areas of Responsibility:

  • Develops creative written content for print and electronic communications to meet defined recruitment and marketing objectives, including multimedia/print collateral, email, direct mail, news releases, feature articles, website/digital, and social
  • Produces messaging targeting key audiences including current and future students (traditional and nontraditional), parents, alumni, donors, employees, news media, and other key stakeholders, and must develop an understanding of and appreciation for these audiences and their specific needs
  • Oversees creation and distribution of communication across a variety of online and offline mechanisms.
  • Works with a freelance team of professionals to source design/layout, video and photography services to enhance engagement with printed and electronic communications
  • Creates and develops effective methods for internal communication to keep employees informed and connected
  • Creates and sends crisis communications to internal and external audiences
  • Spends approximately 20% of time creating content to support the college’s fundraising efforts, including print, email, direct mail, feature articles, web page content and social
  • Manages all aspects of the college’s annual magazine, including creating a production schedule that meets established deadlines, overseeing the work of a graphic artist, writing articles, sourcing and choosing photography and illustrations, editing, and overseeing printing production and mailing services
  • Responds to media inquiries and other external information requests and manages media interactions with staff, faculty and students
  • Serves as primary editor for marketing and development communications
  • Works closely with other departments including Admissions, Financial Aid, Advancement and Professional Development to support event promotion via College channels
  • Oversees the work of interns or work study students
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Familiarity with or ability to learn and use AP style

  • Excellent ability to shift priorities and multi-task in order to meet aggressive deadlines
  • Initiative, solid judgment, personal accountability and the ability to manage multiple and complex projects to successful completion in a timely manner
  • Proficient with creating email marketing campaigns using applications such as MailChimp or CRMs
  • Proficient in the use of Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Photoshop, Acrobat and InDesign, plus solid understanding of the correct use of photo assets in electronic and print media
  • Proficient in creating content in at least one website content management system, preferably WordPress
  • Proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office suite of tools, as well as with collaboration tools such as Basecamp, Teamwork, Microsoft Teams or similar
  • Intermediate experience with Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube

Working Conditions:

Work will be conducted remotely and on campus, with frequent virtual and in-person interactions. Work will require significant contact with students, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders. Additional evening and weekend responsibilities are required for campus events.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to access all areas of the campus, to move around campus to patrol and respond effectively to emergency situations.
  • Manual and physical dexterity and visual acuity needed to operate a computer keyboard and handle paper documents.
  • Sufficient near vision acuity to read information appearing on a computer display screen, in hand-written form, and printed on paper.
  • Adequate hearing and verbal abilities to communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and on the two-way radio system.
  • Mobility to stoop, kneel, bend and reach and lift up to 25 pounds.

Education and Experience:

A Bachelor's degree or higher plus five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in creative writing, advertising, marketing, communications, journalism or a related industry.
