Job Details

Wells College seeks qualified candidates for the position of Director of Resident Life and Student Conduct.  The Director of Residence Life and Student Conduct is a central leadership position within the Student Affairs area.  Reporting to the Dean of Students, the Director is responsible for development and implementation of a comprehensive residential life program grounded in student development theory that complements the academic goals of the institution and supports the growth of individual students.  The Director is an integral member of the Student Affairs division, serving as Deputy Title IX Coordinator and providing operational support for programs and services under a cross-functional team strategy.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Community Development & Support:

  • Develop Community Standards for all Residence Halls
  • Support RAs as they facilitate initial, and ongoing roommate agreements
  • Track and document roommate agreements for students in residence
  • Conflict mediation resulting from roommates or residential communities that are unresolvable by the designated RD or RA
  • Coordinate Room Draw/Housing Selection Process
  • Coordinate Commencement and Summer Housing accommodations
  • Coordinate fall and spring opening processes and procedures
  • Coordinate End of Year Closing
  • Track keys and lockout information
  • Track housing Contracts

Student Conduct

  • Convene and Coordinate Judicial procedures and conduct meetings, including case management and tracking
  • Ensure compliance with reporting of statistics and policy enforcement
  • Review and edit polices as needed in conjunction with dean of students
  • Serve as the Deputy Title IX Coordinator, conduct Title IX investigations and serve as a member of the Title IX response team.

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and serve in the 24-hour on-call rotation, acting as a first responder when necessary
  • Supervise the Residence Hall Director(s)
  • Coordinate break housing services, including RA coverage
  • Respond to room change requests
  • Coordinate with Buildings & Grounds for repairs to individual rooms or common areas
  • Participate in conduct meetings, and subsequent case hearings
  • Attend designated “high-risk” campus events, including some dances, and senior week
  • Oversee the budget for the office of residence life

Student Affairs Cross-Functional Team Member:

  • Collaborate with Student Affairs staff in the development of student support strategies aimed at increasing student retention.
  • Support the Student Affairs team by carrying out agreed upon assignments under the leadership of fellow team members.
  • Supervise assigned professional staff, student office staff, and student event staff.
  • Serve as the staff supervisor for student events, as assigned.
  • Conduct and/or arrange for workshops on topics supporting student success.
  • Respond to inquiries from students, faculty, staff, parents, and members of the community.

Other Duties and Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Serve as an instructor for WLLS 100 student development course sections, when assigned.
  • Develop an assessment plan for the activities sponsored by the office.
  • Review student policies in collaboration with students and Student Affairs staff
  • Serve on College committees and task forces, as assigned
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of student development theory and the operation of residential living and learning communities.  Knowledge of Title IX and applicable laws and regulations aimed at preventing and responding to sexual violence.  Demonstrated ability to coordinate programs with other college departments.  Knowledge of program design and assessment.  Ability to assist in institutional retention efforts and the cultivation of relationships with students and alumni. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s Degree.  Experience in management of residential living and learning communities.  Demonstrated ability to cultivate positive relationships with students and student organizations.  Commitment to diversity and inclusivity and to working with multicultural populations.  Effective leadership and management skills, including interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills. Experience in responding to incidents of sexual violence and compliance with Title IX.  Ability to coordinate programs with other college departments and to assess program effectiveness.  Effective verbal and written communication skills, computer skills, presentation and training skills.  Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters discreetly.  Ability to work independently with little supervision.  Knowledge of budget preparation and management.  Experience with personnel supervision.  Ability to teach student development courses designed to help students adjust to campus life.

Willingness to live in the on-campus apartment provided for this position is preferred, but not required.
