DescriptionThe duties of the Interim Director, Excel Languages Center include administering established Languages Center (LC) programs and developing of new programs to engender academic success; hiring, training, and supervision of LC tutors; managing the LC budget; assessing and evaluating LC programs; collaborating with faculty across the curriculum, Excel Center Directors, other Student Success units, and student organizations to coordinate curricular efforts, support classroom instruction and student development, and extend support for student success; teaching one course each semester in an appropriate discipline. The position reports directly to the Executive Director of Excel Centers.

Job Duties: 
  • Oversees all established Center programs and proposes and develops new programs to meet University needs. This includes peer-facilitated tutorial support in languages, outreach, the creation and maintenance of a supportive safe space for students, and new initiatives to help with retention efforts. The LC Interim Director will oversee the development and maintenance of the LC website.
  • Interviews, hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates an LC staff of approximately 10–20 student peer tutors. The LC Interim Director schedules tutor hours, assigns tutoring projects, arranges staff meetings, and develops ongoing training workshops. The Director is available to assist tutors in difficult tutoring situations by counseling both tutors and students and recommending various strategies to resolve problems. The LC Interim Director is responsible for all human resource processes, including approving and posting payroll hours, and maintaining employment records.
  • Manages the LC budget and the Center’s Student Tech Fee allocation. The Director accounts for, reviews, and proposes budgetary requests to the Excel Executive Director or higher authority as requested.
  • Participates as a faculty member in an appropriate academic department, teaching one course each semester at the undergraduate or graduate level. The LC Interim Director teaches in the Gateway Seminar Program, when possible. The LC Interim Director collaborates with faculty across the curriculum to support instruction and student development in appropriate disciplines. This includes surveying faculty needs and generating proposals for innovative projects to improve student success, researching other national programs, and participating in regional and national conferences.
  • Collaborates with other Excel Center Directors to synchronize efforts and generate proposals for the ongoing development of academic support programs for students, including grant proposals and collaborative projects.
  • Works with other Excel Directors on outreach efforts, for instance, to ensure staffing at a variety of programs that support retention and recruitment, including staff and faculty workshops, and other events. The LC Interim Director works closely with other Excel Directors to ensure the production of quality materials to market the Centers and develop new marketing strategies.
  • Collaborates with Student Success units, such as Disabilities Services, Academic Advising, and the Office of First Year Experience to support students.
  • Responsible for providing assessment, evaluations and accountability for LC programs through formal reports as directed by the Excel Centers Executive Director.
  • Participates in activities of the Languages and Cultures Department, and other academic departments as appropriate. The LC Interim Director represents the Executive Director of Excel Centers to further the mission of the LC, the Excel Centers, and Student Success.

This position has been determined to be exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Salary: $65,000

QualificationsMinimum Requirements:
  • Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in an appropriate field (languages, higher education, and leadership), or bachelor's degree and current enrollment in an advanced degree program (Master or Doctoral level)
  • Five (5) years of experience working in a student support center or program
  • One (1) year of teaching experience (two courses) teaching at the university/college level
Preferred Requirements:
  • Ph.D. from an accredited college or university in an appropriate field (languages, higher education and leadership)
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching
  • Direct experience supervising students
  • Teaching in Gateway Seminar Program
