Department Summary:

The department has a mission to provide a high quality education to our diverse student population through excellence and innovation in teaching and research in order to serve the scientific and engineering needs of the state of Texas and the nation. This will be achieved by a balance of formal course work, practical laboratory training, and research projects that encompass both the basic science and the applied aspects of materials science and engineering. The department offers B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering programs.

Position Summary:

The University of North Texas (UNT) seeks nominations or applications for the Chair of the Materials Science and Engineering (MTSE) Department within its College of Engineering. The Department is committed to advancing UNT’s Tier 1 (R1) status, strengthening our ABET accredited undergraduate program, and educating graduate materials scientists and engineers through innovative teaching and cutting-edge research. The MTSE department has 18 full time faculty members, including 2 NAE members, approximately 110 undergraduates, and 85 graduate students. UNT’s Materials Research Facility houses an impressive suite of characterization and processing instrumentation (https://mrf.research.unt.edu/) and is an integral component of the department’s core capability. Applicants are sought at the Professor level. Salary, benefits, and a teaching load typical for a major research university can be expected.

Minimum Qualifications:

Nominees or applicants must have: an earned doctorate relevant to a program in materials science and engineering; academic achievements commensurate with a tenured appointment at the rank of Professor within MTSE; a strong track record of sustained excellence in research including extramural funding; prior academic experience in a US institution; and a commitment to diversity and inclusiveness.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred qualifications include:
- Experience in developing and sustaining internal and external partnerships in education and research.
- Commitment to shared governance.
- Ability to work effectively with the Dean to advance the department.
- Knowledge of ABET accreditation standards and procedures.
