Occupational Summary:

We are an accredited human tissue biorepository housed in the Department of Pathology, directed by a Duke School of Medicine Faculty Member. The biorepository is funded to support biomedical research at Duke University and on behalf of the National Cancer Institute. The individual hired will be responsible for overseeing multiple business-critical systems that are essential to the daily functionality and operations of the department. The individual will ensure continuous availability, functionality, security, integrity, user training, and documentation. They will assist in the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of tools to support the work processes of the department; and work closely with leadership, faculty, development team members, and end users at Duke Medicine. Work Performed:

Operations:

Collaborates with the cross-functional project team on planning, implementation, and testing of the database and system upgrades. Ensures the systems are used and the data is structured in such a way to support the highest level of reporting and strategic planning needs of the organization, while at the same time meeting the daily reporting needs of the administrative units. Ensures data integrity to maintain consistency and accuracy of data collected from or passed to various sources. Designs and deploys templates in the system as well as frontend web- pages for reports and queries on the data. Advises users and administration on how best to use these systems to support their activities. This includes consulting on issues of effective work processes. Analyzes data and prepares reports setting forth progress, trends, and recommendations. Anticipates data and reporting needs as new programs and processes are developed in these areas. Provides and/or coordinates training in appropriate software across the areas. Troubleshoots user-reported problems, escalating was necessary to content experts, central IT staff (e.g., OIT, DHTS, ASM), or departmental IT support staff. Identifies areas in the organization where more consistent policies need to be put into place. Brings together faculty, administrators, and/or central offices to resolve issues, and agree on policy or workflow. Maintains system documentation. Builds consensus on shared data elements and reporting needs across schools/departments. Ensures that required interfaces with other systems and internal and external organizations are developed and maintained. Promotes and directs future systems enhancements as needed.

Leadership:

Encourage and support colleagues in completing project work. Assist research colleagues in identifying efficiencies and improving process. Maintain Duke and project specific training requirements.

Communication:

Write and speak clearly in a variety of settings and styles to convey messages and ideas effectively. Prepare for and lead team meetings. Recognize when others need to be brought into the conversation and escalate appropriately. Expand on the ideas of peers or team members. Take an active role in including others in decision-making.

Type of Research:

This position supports the BioRepository and Precision Pathology Center (BRPC), within the Department of Pathology. The individual hired will be responsible for database infrastructure, maintenance, and improvement. The individual will also collaborate with DCI informatics team to assist in the development and maintenance of this infrastructure. This includes multiple business-critical systems including a biobanking information management system (BIMS). The individual hired will be responsible for research-directed interactions with the Epic electronic health record (EHR), OnCore Clinical Trials Management Software (CTMS), and National Cancer Institute-related databases.

Special Skills:

Experience with bio-banking is preferred but not required. Excellent verbal and written communication is essential.

Work requires a Bachelor's degree.
