Visiting Assistant Professor or Instructor of French and Francophone Language and Cultures

Job description

Beloit College, a selective liberal arts college located on the Wisconsin-Illinois border, seeks a one-year (with possibility of renewal) Visiting Assistant Professor or Instructor of French and Francophone Language and Cultures to begin September 1, 2020.

Candidates should have a specialization in Francophone literature and culture. Regular teaching responsibilities include introductory French language courses and advanced literature and culture courses, including those that reach across traditional disciplinary boundaries and that engage critically with the discipline
itself. Such courses might draw on fields such as (post-)colonial studies, history, Latin American and Caribbean studies, Middle Eastern and African studies, environmental studies, media studies, comparative literature, art history, critical identity studies, anthropology, health and society, and philosophy. In addition, we seek a candidate who can contribute to our Career Channels programming and Institutional Learning Outcome goals (Productive Collaboration, Effective Communication, Creative Problem Solving, and Intellectual and Professional Agility). Commitment to attracting students from traditionally underrepresented populations is especially welcome, as is an interest in promoting inclusivity and diversity both within the French and Francophone program and the larger college community. We seek candidates with evidence of successful teaching experience at the post-secondary level, and request that at least one letter of recommendation
address the candidate’s performance in the classroom. PhD in French or related fields in hand by commencement of employment is preferred. ABD considered. Teaching load is 4 courses per year. Native or near-native fluency in both French and English required. Fall courses for this position will be online; spring courses may be online or hybrid. Successful candidate will be required to live in Wisconsin or Illinois for tax purposes.

Because equity and inclusion are central to our students’ liberal education and vital to the thriving of all members of our residential learning community, Beloit College aspires to be an actively anti-racist institution. We recognize our aspiration as ongoing and institution-wide, involving collective commitment and accountability. We welcome employees who are committed to and will actively contribute to our efforts to celebrate our cultural and intellectual richness and be resolute in advancing inclusion and equity. We encourage all interested individuals meeting the criteria of the described position to apply.

Located in a diverse community close to Madison, Milwaukee, and Chicago, Beloit is a selective undergraduate liberal arts college that attracts students from across the United States and the world. The college emphasizes excellence in teaching, learning beyond the traditional classroom, international perspectives, and collaborative research among students and faculty. It is recognized as one of the Colleges That Change Lives.
