Student employees will serve in a dual role as Supplemental Instruction Leader with additional time scheduled as a Peer-tutor, in order to provide comprehensive student support. Both roles require separate, pre-employment training.

Job Description

DUTIES AND TASKS:

Peer-tutors assist students in becoming a more successful and independent learner. Peer tutors provide and help to integrate effective learning and study strategies for their assigned students, while at the same time helping to clarify and/or reinforce course content, assignments and material.

Provide individualized content and skill-development tutoring to students.
Create and maintain a tutoring schedule convenient to both tutor and tutee.
Keep accurate and timely records of each tutoring session using Accudemia software.
Successfully complete CRLA Level 1 Tutor Training requirements.
Have thorough knowledge of college services, supports, and resources.
Maintain strict confidentiality of all student information, material, and discussions shared during the tutoring relationship.

Supplemental Instruction Leaders facilitate regularly scheduled, out-of-class review sessions for targeted courses. The sessions are informal seminars in which students review notes, discuss readings, develop organizational tools, and prepare for examinations. Students learn how to integrate course content with reasoning and study skills.

Attend the targeted SI class, take notes, and participate in discussions.
Be knowledgeable about course requirements and meet with course instructor.
Be available for a small number of drop-in tutoring hours and attain CRLA Level 1 status.
Actively recruit participants for SI sessions.
Conduct at least one full 50-minute weekly session for each of your assigned sections throughout the semester.
Plan SI sessions using a wide variety of the interactive learning strategies (without re-teaching, lecturing or completing students’ assignments for them).

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

A grade of B+ or higher in any selected SI course.
Have and maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 or above.
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Be able to flexibly work 8-10 hours per week.
Be a model student who understands the importance and application of effective study skills and strategies.
