The Teaching Animal Unit (TAU) is a dynamic teaching institution for veterinary students in all four years of the veterinary curriculum that includes experiences with swine, poultry, sheep, goats, horses and beef/dairy cattle. The purpose of the TAU is to provide realistic opportunities for veterinary students to learn the relationship between husbandry, production management, economics, and the field of veterinary medicine.

This live animal farming enterprise strives to function in a manner compatible with a financially viable agricultural enterprise by emphasizing current best management practices for an environmentally enriched, animal welfare friendly operation. This student exposure is accomplished annually by providing live animal educational training for seven senior 2-week clinical rotations, six 1-week selectives and in excess of 150 teaching laboratories (currently comprising 100 students per class at 25 students per lab and 4th year clinical rotations as needed).

Essential Job Duties

This position will be responsible for daily operations relating to the dairy facility within TAU. This position will be responsible for training and supervising the student employees and other Unit Technicians with duties that pertain to the Dairy unit including policies, procedures or processes within the dairy facility. This position will work directly with faculty clinicians, residents and staff within team-teaching situations in dairy-related teaching laboratories and student evaluations.

The responsibilities of the employee will require intense planning and coordination as many duties tie directly into each other, and all planning must combine mandates for animal health and welfare, for farm function, for coordinating with teaching needs, co-op requirements/set targets and seasons. For instance, this position must assure that the planning and execution of the dairy herd’s reproduction not only assures sufficient milk production for farm income, but that we have sufficient numbers of animals at varying stages of their lifecycle to meet our teaching goals, while meeting the requirements of the milk co-op regarding base milk production.

This position must balance the TAU’s mandates for public outreach and environmental stewardship with biosecurity and legal food safety regulations, including waste management requirements from both state and federal entities. Further, this position carries the responsibility for establishing and monitoring the feeding components, personnel, and schedules to meet the animal’s health and production needs, assuring the dairy is fiscally responsible, while meeting our teaching mandates. This position must have full understanding of the dairy industry, including the milk PMO and inspection requirements (IACUC, State, Federal, and Co-Op Inspections), and daily operations and procedures. This position requires the individual to stay up to date on dairy CE trainings to meet those regulation requirements. This position must oversee the direct care provided by other technicians and student workers regarding not just the dairy but also the calving and calf care.

This position must participate in forward planning on capital investments and changing mandates for teaching, service, and farm revenue to assure the farm’s future.

The dairy unit is inspected unannounced by the interstate milk processing company (Maryland and Virginia Milk Producers) as well as the NC Department of Agriculture to insure the milk quality is acceptable. It is the responsibility of this position to assure that the dairy meets all local, state, and federal requirements for Grade A milk production. Hence, this position monitors the quality of milk and milk production, maintains required records for system maintenance and sanitation, and is the first responder for any mechanical or operational problems, whenever they arise. This also means that this position is the primary individual to troubleshoot (and repair, if possible) the farm equipment. Therefore, the incumbent must be well versed in all farm equipment, specifically pertaining to a dairy operation, be capable of farm mechanical repair and maintenance, and be able to problem solve swiftly and within budget.

This position the first point of contact and detection for animal health. If a cow is down in milk or has a high SCC (somatic cell count) or mastitis, this position must come up with a treatment plan through coordination with veterinary clinicians and participating students. As a result, this position will be on-call 24/7 for any questions or concerns that occur in the dairy.

This position is responsible for training and supervising the 6+ DVM student employees at the dairy. The TAU hires DVM students to perform multiple farm activities and tasks – typically involving early morning, evening, and weekend shifts – in order to provide advanced students with in-depth experience and training beyond our standard curriculum. This position is responsible for much of this advanced training and supervision, which requires animal husbandry and health skills.

The entire Teaching Animal Unit is creating a new plan for future expansion and improvements, and that the TAU Dairy is the central unit for that effort, this position will play a major role in assisting working groups with understanding the needs and mandates of the unit, and how new facilities, operations, or regulations will impact our farm stability and teaching capacities.

Lastly, this position is essential for maintaining animal health and welfare, as well as student and other personnel safety during adverse weather events or other events disrupting normal operations.

Other Work/Responsibilities

• Other work duties to comprise approximately 5% of the incumbent’s time.
• Assist faculty and residents in conducting specific laboratory activities for veterinary students. This requires the ability to properly demonstrate basic handling and restraints (including tying important knots for restraints), blood collection, SQ and IM injections, stomach tubing, foot trimming, body scoring based on stage of lactation, CMT testing and animal casting.
• Maintaining facilities and equipment
• Must have the physical ability to move 50-70lb bales of hay, with or without reasonable accommodations, to help with storing hay (seasonal)

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree and two years of general research experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Departmental Required Skills

• Knowledge of Dairy Milking Operations, including Dairy Management
• Strong communication skills (both oral and written).
• Ability to maintain, repair, and trouble shoot farm equipement

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

• Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science or Agricultural related field
• 3 +years’ experience in Dairy operations.
• Previous teaching/instruction experience.
• Experience supervising and training students.
• Experience in a veterinary academic setting.

Required License or Certification

A valid NC Driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of employment.
