 The Department of Biostatistics and Informatics and the ACCORDS (Adult and Child Center for Health Outcomes Research and Delivery Science) program have an opening for a full-time position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor in the tenure track.  We are seeking applicants with a strong track record of both collaborative and independent research with a focus on health services research and other areas of T3-T4 science. This is a full-time, 12-month position, to start as soon as possible with substantial non-grant secure funding for consultation and development roles.  The Biostatistics Core will be essential in achieving ACCORDS’s research and educational missions.

Nature of Work

This posting seeks experienced individuals with prior independent research experience and funding. Experience at the federal level (e.g., R awards at NIH/AHRQ or equivalent) is required. The position will involve significant consulting with and mentoring other faculty on relevant research methods, grant applications, and publications. Specific areas of interest include expertise in pragmatic trials, step-wedge designs, longitudinal data, causal inference, cluster-randomized trials, and analysis of electronic health records. 

This faculty position will have their academic affiliation in the Department of Biostatistics and Informatics and will lead a well-established Biostatistics and Analysis core in ACCORDS, a research center supporting the advancement of health services research and T3-T4 translational research that is jointly funded by the School of Medicine and Children’s Hospital Colorado Research Institute.  ACCORDS serves as the focal point for health care professionals, researchers and analysts from across the Anschutz Medical Campus to foster multidisciplinary collaborations that bring together our campus’ diverse skills and talents to pursue health services research and education.  In addition, ACCORDS cultivates strong research and educational collaborations with external partners including the University of Colorado School of Public Health, Children’s Hospital Colorado, Denver Health, Kaiser Permanente Colorado, UCHealth, other health care delivery systems, community organizations, and state and local government agencies.  ACCORDS has programs in Dissemination and Implementation Science, Patient-Centered Decision Making, Education, Data Science and Community Engagement and Outreach, as well as cores in Qualitative and Mixed Methods Science, Practice-Based Research Networks (PBRNs), Biostatistics for Health Services Research, and Mobile Health and Health Information Technology (HIT). 

The successful candidate will lead the ACCORDS Biostatistics Core and have opportunities to collaborate with over 70 ACCORDS affiliated faculty and other health services researchers from the Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Public Health, Dental Medicine and the College of Nursing. In addition to leading this research core, the candidate will be funded to consult with faculty regarding applied research and will engage in collaborative research as well as develop and conduct original methodological research if they desire.  They will support proposals to secure external funding, and contribute to our educational mission including teaching post-docs and faculty across the various ACCORDS sponsored fellowships and other educational programs across campus.  

In addition, the faculty member will be part of the Department of Biostatistics and Informatics (DBI), one of five departments in the Colorado School of Public Health (CSPH). Faculty and students in the department apply analytic methods, statistical reasoning and information management techniques to health data in medical and public health fields.  Professional and research activities include the design and analysis of basic, application and translational research and clinical trials, statistical consulting, development of new statistical methods, disease information services, research databases and more.

Supervision Received:

The faculty member will be supervised by the Director of ACCORDS regarding all aspects of their job performance at ACCORDS.  Their academic advancement will be supervised by the Chair of the Department of Biostatistics and Informatics.  All faculty within the ACCORDS Biostatistics Core as well as the Chair of Biostatistics and Informatics and other faculty in DBI are available for mentorship and guidance.

Supervision Exercised

This position will have supervisory responsibilities for master’s level analysts, junior faculty at the Assistant and Associate Professor levels, and postdoctoral fellows.

Examples of Work Performed

Responsibilities for the faculty member may include but are not limited to the following:   (1) Manage and lead the biostatistician core in ACCORDS(2) Participate in collaborative research, including grant and paper writing, developing analytic plans, and supervise/mentor junior biostatistician faculty; (3) Teach and mentor Fellows and junior faculty in other ACCORD programs; (4) Serve as a mentor on faculty development awards at ACCORDS; (5) Develop his or her biostatistical methods research in their focused area of interest, eventually seeking funding for that research whenever possible.  With respect to the Department of Biostatistics and Informatics, the faculty member will be expected to teach one class on an annual basis.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range for this position has been established at $134,000 to $185,000. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a varity of factors, including but not limited to, rank, internal equity, experience, education, and area of expertise. Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 6-8 years (Associate Professor) or 12-14 years (Professor) of experience in a related position
  • PhD degree in statistics, biostatistics, mathematics, computer science, applied mathematics or related fields.
  • An ongoing, sustained peer-reviewed publication record.
  • Evidence of leadership and impact in research.
  • Evidence of considerable success (Associate Professor) or excellence (Professor) in teaching and mentoring students.
  • A national and/or international reputation in research.
  • A record of continuous and sustained external research funding as a co-investigator.
  • Evidence of external research funding as a lead investigator.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead the biostatistical design and analytic elements of T3-T4 research projects.
  • Demonstrated record of supervision of junior researchers and analysts of T3-T4 research projects.
  • Leadership in and service to professional and/or scientific organizations. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Appointment to responsible positions within the candidate’s previous institution(s).
  • A mix of first, senior and other types of authorship defined by the candidate’s field that represents a significant and sustained body of scientific research.
