The Associate Vice President (AVP) for Health, Wellness and Student Services is a senior administrative position reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA). This position assists the VPSA with the overall management, planning, administration, and evaluation of the division’s programs, services, personnel, policies, procedures, facilities and budgets, and provides leadership in the design and implementation of coordinated campus/division-wide initiatives. The Associate Vice President (AVP) provides administrative oversight for Student Services focused on student success and holistic development in seven (7) functional areas: Accessible Education Center (including Center for Accessible Technology), Counseling Services, Military & Veterans Student Services, Office of University Ombudsperson, Behavior Intervention Team, Student Health Center (including Wellness & Health Promotion) and the UndocuSpartan Resource Center. The AVP works closely with direct reports to develop and assess learning and developmental outcomes as well as service-delivery and standards, and provides consultation that focuses on high quality, student-centered approaches, trends, and best practices. Additionally, the AVP provides visionary leadership in building collaborative partnerships with campus and community constituents to foster access, student engagement, retention, and deep commitment to student success. The AVP partners with university stakeholders to promote co-curricular learning, inclusive excellence, and a campus community that welcomes and supports diverse perspectives. This position represents the university and division on internal and external committees and serves on the division management teams.

This is a position in the CSU - Management Personnel Plan (MPP), and serves at the pleasure of the President. This position will require adherence to University compliance training such as: Conflict of Interest and Ethics, AB 1825 Sexual Harassment Prevention, Information Security, and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. The person hired for this position may be required to complete an outside employment disclosure statement in accordance with Title V of the California Code of Regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides direct supervision, hiring, training, and evaluation for five directors (MPPs), One Case Manager (MPP), two program directors (SSPIV), and an administrative analyst responsible for a broad portfolio of student support, services, and programs in six (7) functional areas: Accessible Education Center (including Center for Accessible Technology), Counseling Services, Military & Veteran Student Services, University Ombudsperson, Behavior Intervention Team, Student Health Center (including Wellness & Health Promotion) and UndocuSpartan Resource Center.
  • Provides fiscal oversight and establishment of priorities for multiple budgets in excess of $12 million; encourages departments to seek other funding sources to augment programs and services.
  • Controls and monitors operational activities to ensure efficient and effective allocation of campus resources.
  • Serves as VP level of review and makes recommendations in matters pertaining to the recruitment, tenure and promotion (RTP) of faculty members assigned to Counseling Services.
  • Collaborates across university lines to develop policy and protocol
  • Assists the Vice President of Student Affairs with the division’s mission and overall creation, development, management, administration, evaluation and improvement of the division’s programs, services, personnel, policies, procedures, facilities, divisional goals and priorities, and other issues of divisional and institutional significance.
  • Develops and oversees operational and strategic planning efforts that fulfill the mission of the Division and enhancement of the college experience for students.
  • Oversees the Behavioral Intervention Team, and assesses case management.
  • Participates as a member of the VPSA Council and the Student Affairs Leadership Team (SALT).
  • Represents the university and division on internal and external committees and at official functions including partnerships with Academic Affairs, other Divisions, and the broader community.
  • Advises the VPSA and other university leadership on matters related to student welfare, growth, and development; co-curricular learning; and student access, retention, and success.
  • Serves as member/co-lead for the Economic Crisis Response Team
  • Represents the VPSA at internal and functions as needed.
  • Participates in professional organizations and professional development opportunities to increase knowledge of current issues, regional and national trends, and best practices in student affairs/services.
  • Serves on the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) to assist with division emergency protocol, critical incident procedures, and threat assessment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of administration in Student Affairs at the university level
  • Knowledge of leadership, professional staff supervision, budget management, strategic planning, personnel, problem solving, and business correspondence, reports, presentations and policy manuals.
  • Ability to develop and carrying out assessment of strategic goals and evidence of a strong background in data-informed decision-making.
  • Ability and commitment to establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships within a diverse, multicultural environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of student development theories relevant to a metropolitan university, appropriate best practices, and demonstrated sensitivity and understanding of the needs of a large and diverse student body.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications within the university and with external agencies.
  • Ability to handle multiple work priorities, organize, and plan work effectively, in a professional manner, in a detail oriented and fast paced environment.
  • Commitment to collaborative teamwork across academic and student affairs divisions, as well as other divisions, to build a sound campus environment.
  • Ability to research, understand and apply a variety of state, federal, CSU, and SJSU policies and procedures.
  • Ability to lead individuals in team effort to accomplish institutional and divisional goals and objectives.
  • Knowledge of relevant software applications including word processing, spreadsheets, and database management.
  • Ability to establish positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and community members.
  • Ability to be self-directed but work effectively as a collaborative team player.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, faculty, staff, students, media, and community members.
  • Excellent customer service and public relations skills.

Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university
  • Ten years of experience with at least five years serving at the director level or above in a college or university
  • Experience in a comprehensive counseling and/or retention program, including supervisory experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in higher education administration, student affairs, or a related field
  • Ten years of progressively responsible professional experience in higher education in academic and/or student affairs administration or related fields, including responsibility for planning, policy, program development and program implementation, and managing budgets, at the director level (or equivalent) or higher
  • Experience enhancing the university experience for a diverse student population
  • Experience working with at-risk student populations and maximizing their access to higher education and developing student retention strategies
  • Experience working closely and maintain strong positive relationships with the full range of internal and external university constituents.
  • Leadership experience in student affairs/life at the university level

Compensation

Classification: Administrator IV
Hiring Range: Commensurate with experience
