General Summary:

The Director of the Office for Urban and Off Campus Support Services (U-ACCESS) will directly supervise the activities of the entire U-ACCESS office in support of its mission to aid UMass Boston students in meeting their basic needs so they can achieve academic success. The Director will also lead U-ACCESS in providing leadership development and inspiring student agency in mitigating systemic poverty. The Director will supervise the U-ACCESS program coordinator, who will coordinate food pantry operations and center programming, the Social Services Coordinator, who will coordinate the case management functions of the office. The Director will also steward the relationship with Campus Compact of Southern New England and supervise the CNCS VISTA in exploring ways of expanding the capacity of the center in pursuit of its mission. In these functions, the Director will be expected to utilize high-level programming skills, including but not limited to recruitment, selection, and training of students; project management, budgeting and fundraising; program evaluation and assessment. The Director will report to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, and may serve as a member of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs’ Cabinet.

Examples of Duties:

  • Responsible for the development and implementation of program policies and procedures, fiscal management and personnel supervision related to direct service provision, program development and implementation, and activities for U-ACCESS
  • Collaborate with other campus units and offices, including those under Academic Affairs, and with community groups and organizations, to develop and implement co-curricular learning opportunities and initiatives that promote student development, student engagement, student leadership, and service learning (local, national, international experiences) for U-ACCESS
  • Manage the U-ACCESS budget
  • Oversee recruitment, selection training and ongoing coordination for all U-ACCESS student leader program
  • Maintain and facilitate relationships with funding organizations, write grant proposals and participate in fundraising activities for the center
  • Serve as single point of contact (SPOC) for hungry and homeless youth through Department of Transitional Assistance.
  • Meet with UACCESS professional staff regularly to supervise planning and implementation of activities and programs
  • Encourage innovation and responsibility in program planning and implementation
  • Educate and advise student employees about institutional policies, related legal matters, and fiscal responsibility
  • Develop opportunities to inspire student agency in mitigating systemic poverty
  • Provide opportunities for students to practice leadership and organizational skills
  • Instruct about ethics, diversity, and other critical values of a successful university community
  • Prepare appropriate personnel action documents, including applications, job descriptions, time sheets, promotion/demotion actions, resignation/termination forms
  • Work with students to develop and manage periodic budgets and perform periodic reviews to insure accuracy and adherence to plan, making adjustments as needed
  • Supervise the creation of outreach materials to promote knowledge of and participation in student programming
  • Organize and facilitate participation of U-ACCESS at University-wide events, e.g. Orientation, Open House, Welcome Day, etc.
  • Ensure campus-wide space reservations for UACCESS services and programs
  • Lead unit strategic planning and assessment, using data to inform practice and to improve programs and services;
  • Develop student employee learning outcomes and assess student employment experience
  • Act as liaison to appropriate academic departments, and community-based organizations and/or other resources to support student services and support
  • Develop and implement training for staff and students on a variety of topics, including leadership, teambuilding conflict resolution, diversity and multiculturalism, and assessment
  • Oversee the organization of U-ACCESS events and workshops.
  • Supervise the development and maintenance of communication tools such as webpage or social media with updated information and opportunities to support students.
  • Supervise the purchase goods and services to meet programmatic needs of the office.
  • Administer Pro-Card used for purchasing; reconcile monthly Pro-Card statements to adhere to and comply with university policies and procedures;
  • Create credit-based opportunities for UMass Boston students
  • Engage with the national dialogue on collegiate basic needs insecurity, including maintaining relevant relationships, attending and hosting conferences, and participating in research
  • Adhere to and seek out best practices for basic needs insecurity and high impact practices for student success
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications:

    A Master’s degree in higher education or human services administration preferred, but 2 additional years of related experience will also be considered in lieu of Master’s degree. Working knowledge of and demonstrated experience with community resources/partnerships and underserved/underrepresented postsecondary populations, including students emancipated from foster care, temporarily homeless students, low income single parents preferred. Previous experience with grant writing and fundraising highly preferred. This position requires highly developed skills in training and supervising student employees. Knowledge of University payroll policies and procedures is helpful. The ability to work occasional evening and weekend hours and to maintain a flexible schedule is necessary.
