The Deputy Chief Information Officer (CIO) in Florida State University’s central IT division is responsible for overseeing IT-related initiatives that strengthen campus-wide technology services while enabling the University to operate more efficiently.
As a key member of the senior leadership team of Information Technology Services (ITS), the Deputy CIO works collaboratively with University leadership and departmental stakeholders across the university. The Deputy CIO reports directly to the University’s Associate Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer (CIO). As a member of the senior leadership team, the Deputy CIO represents the CIO in their absence and functions as the organization’s chief of staff. The Deputy CIO leads a team of IT and administrative professionals in the areas of change management and planning, budget and finance, IT workforce development, and campus-wide relationship management.
In collaboration with University and ITS leadership, this position leads strategic and operational planning, aligning IT priorities and actions in support of University-wide goals. Understands how IT decisions impact University operations and develops strategies for communicating these decisions and achieving desired results. Functions as the CIO’s chief of staff with decision making authority. Oversees and provides guidance on numerous ITS cross-department initiatives to ensure collaboration, financial planning, and project delivery. In addition, the Deputy CIO acts as the primary liaison with Academic Technology functions of the university such as the Libraries, Office of Distance Learning, Digital Humanities, Innovation Hub, and classroom technologies and learning spaces. The Deputy CIO is responsible for coordination and strategic planning for academic technologies in partnership with ITS and the units.
This position provides direct management oversight to the following ITS functions: change management and planning, budget and finance, IT workforce development, and campus-wide relationship management. Provides direct oversight for organizational staffing changes and requests, ensuring resources are justified and best aligned with services that advance organizational goals in support of University needs. Provides oversight, financial strategy, and accountability for the organization’s operational budget, and encourages ITS leadership to identify opportunities for cost savings and efficiencies.
This position represents ITS on a variety of University-wide committees. Consults with external technology experts to identify emerging IT trends and opportunities. Fosters relationships with regional and national IT associations, such as EDUCAUSE, Internet 2, Statewide University System collaborations, Florida lambda Rail, and other institutions of higher education. Manages the weekly ITS Executive Leadership meetings and chairs the meetings in the absence of the CIO.
Master's degree and six years’ experience or bachelor’s degree and eight years of experience. Three years of experience must be in a supervisory role. Additional education may substitute for experience.
Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and practices of accounting, budgeting and the cost control procedures.
Knowledge of and the ability to apply the principles and practices to strategically align tasks and people with organizational goals and objectives.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of project planning, development and evaluation.
Ability to strategically plan and serve as a catalyst for organizational change, cultivate a shared vision with others, and motivate others to transfer vision into action.
Dynamic leadership with excellent interpersonal and analytical skills and a strong commitment to collaboration, identifying opportunities, creative problem solving, and customer service.
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of IT management with direct operations experience at an institution of higher education.
Exceptional communication skills, both written and oral.
Ability to work effectively at all levels of the organization and influence others to progress toward a common vision or goal.
In-depth knowledge of and familiarity with IT products and services.
A thorough understanding of IT in higher education with the ability to understand, communicate and advise on the potential outcome of critical decisions.
A commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse University community.
At least 10 years of extensive IT management experience within a University setting.
Advanced degree is preferred.
